in 2000 thru 2001 former Shudder To Think guitarist and future award-winning film composer Nathan Larson took a sharp turn with the album JEALOUS GOD and EP I MUST LEARN TO LIVE ALONE. This small body of stark neo-soul material was a departure from the loud, angular art rock of Shudder To Think, and represented a reworking of the classic soul idiom of the 'mid 60s to early '70s, filtered through the prism of Larson's white boy experimental punk / rock past, in the manner of Bowie's YOUNG AMERICANS.

The bulk of these recordings were made in London with producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley (Elvis Costello, Madness, Bowie, Morrissey) , and there remain a number of unreleased demos, recorded in New York, that have yet to see the light of day. About 5 live performances of this material took place in New York City.

Larson was soon to move more or less full time into film-scoring (BOYS DON'T CRY, THE WOODSMAN, TIGERLAND, PALINDROMES etc etc) , but this 16 month detour gives a sense of a possible direction not fully explored by a restless and unpredictable artist whose body of work includes runs up and down the spectrum; from raw hardcore punk, dense modern classical and electronic composition, lo-fi noodlings, singer-songwriter work, and spaces in between.
