Although the industry is virtually flooded with Hip Hop artists, Mz Nokz is still not something you see everyday. She’s white – she rhymes – and she’s nice. Or, as she puts it in a verse from “Just Me,” a song recorded for her upcoming second album, “…skin might be pale/but I rhyme like Hell.” Nearing the end of the recording stage for her sophomore album, as of yet untitled, this artist, with her intense, vibrant personality, is gearing up for her new release, which she says really showcases her growth as an artist, as well as a person. “I feel like I’m finally starting to use my gift as God intended with this project – and I’m totally pumped!”
Not one to run from adversity, Nokz takes advantage of every situation – the good and the bad, by channeling her emotions and experiences into her music. And although she’s gone through many peaks and valleys in her life and her career, some of which have even made her question whether or not she wanted to continue on her musical path, she just can’t let it go – She’s been given a gift, and she’s meant to use it. No matter what anyone says, or how bad things get, Nokz realizes she serves a higher purpose with her music. “I don’t care what people think of me anymore. It just doesn’t matter. My main goal is to inspire and empower.”
Since her first album, Love me or Hate me, released in October 2006 by OnOurGame Entertainment, which she co-owns with her husband, JonBlaQ, Mz Nokz has steadily been building a fan base, as well as exploring other opportunities in the music industry. Her skills as a songwriter/composer led to a publishing deal, where she expanded her songwriting abilities even further, writing R&B, Pop/Rock, Gospel and Adult Contemporary compositions, as well as demoing Pop/Rock tracks herself. Since her deal ended in 2009, Nokz continues writing songs outside of the Hip Hop genre for potential placement, as well as her own material.
And although the focus of her personal music has further shifted to spirituality, Nokz still maintains the potency of her lyrics and flow, and will satisfy old and new fans alike. From intricate stories, like “Dancing with Death,” a chilling tale told from the perspective of a person in a coma, the flirtatious love song, “Falling like a Star,” “Open Your Eyes,” in which Nokz urges listeners to unplug from the “Matrix,” to “Mic Flow,” a battle song filled with clever punch lines showcasing her skills as an emcee, Mz Nokz always goes hard and keeps it Hip Hop.
