"Make Your Own Maps is a stunningly unique composite of slightly jazzy meter tempered by the rapid, combative attributes of DC hardcore at its peak. Compounding situationist philosophy with heavy rock and roll rhythms that stretch into welcomed punk parameters, Maps—in its grace and voracious pursuit of veracity— has created a hot, lush sound. Steeped in empathy and fueled by biting honesty and observations made tactile through the barest understanding only the truly egalitarian still feel, they’ve created a sometimes vulgar, superbly animated, and laudable visual experience. Elevating the bedrock of classic punk rock one level, their wildly intense and subversive tunes create a kinetic energy that fuels an unmistakable synergy onstage.

The San Antonio quartet is tightly knit and well acquainted with their individual contributions to create a phenomenal live show, coercing even the staunchly cross-armed show goer to dance. As drummer Sergio Hernandez employs a less-is-more philosophy to his at times rabid, but always-steady performance, bassist Luis Faraklas and guitarist Charlie Cruz play hard, proficiently, and to the point. Front man Travis Buffkin’s erratic seizing and Iggy Pop-esque thrashing is the final segment in Maps’ barely-veiled populist murmurings.

With a stage presence that eclipses many of their contemporary counterparts, Maps’ scathing lyrics stirs even a turgid crowd. Their—sometimes— offensive interaction with an audience exhumes the allure of traditional, true punk, indulging the human need to binge and purge, even for just a moment. The audacity they radiate makes each performance more entertaining than the last, as cocked hips emit a slightly out-of-reach sexuality and a tinge of femininity that maintains a crucial balance." - Francesca Camillo
