Indiana is the crossroads of the United States. Historically, this statement has referred solely to the geographic location of the state. However, Indiana is also the crossroads of the vast world of music. The musical palette of the state is filled with both traditional forms of music as well as abstract and sporadic genres. From the experimental pop of California and Caribbean-infused jazz of Louisiana to the unparalleled electronica of Chicago and Detroit to the raw, groundbreaking rap of the Big Apple, all music comes together here. The music created in Indiana often is an amalgam of the aforementioned styles, along with any and all sounds from around the country. One individual who is at the forefront of the musical movement in Indiana is H.T. Muhammad, the CEO and chief producer for Hellatight Productions. A native Hoosier, Muhammad has spent his life discovering, chronicling, and absorbing the music around him. Growing up to the classic grooves from the Isley Brothers, Lonnie Liston Smith, and the Meters gave HT the foundation for creating original music. Add such canonical acts as Bob James, Kraftwerk, and Sly & Robbie to the mix along with Hip-Hop pioneers like DJ Premier, Mantronix, and Afrika Bambaataa, and the one word that comes to mind is eclectic. Hellatights tracks draw from all of his influences, but primarily focus on his unrivaled originality. There is no way to categorize his sound. One listen to his debut full-length Hellucinations (Hellatight Productions 2003) shows the diversity of the Hellatight catalog. The tracks run the gamut from hardcore Hip-Hop to experimental jungle/drum and bass to minimalist trance; sounds that appeal to Hip-Hop heads, beat diggers, ravers, and any fans of original music. While producers from every genre watch the television and listen to the radio in order to hear and see to which direction he/she should flee, HT blazes his own paths. Quick to try something new, Muhammad sees himself in the company of such contemporaries as Jay Dee, SMK, Madlib, Cold 187um, and Portishead cats who really change things. In order to create these trailblazing pieces of work, HT uses a variety of production tools. Utilizing live keyboards, guitars, and drums in the mix along with classic sounds from the TR-808, SP1200, and ASR10 makes the tracks hellatight. But Muhammad is not afraid to get his fingers dusty while digging in crates for an unpolished gem. This mix of live and sampled music elevates his work above the core of modern producers.
