The Short story about Mat:I live in the inner west of Sydney in New South Wales with my Wife Diane & Daughter Annelise (Lilith) and 3 Golden Retrievers Zac, Jazz & Belle. I joined Mortal Sin in 1985 after some shorts stints in school type bands. My first band was The Selastic Gaskets (1979), then I sang for Galleon (1980), and Crashed Landing (1980) with (now famous) Guitarist Steve Edmonds. I then hooked up with a band called Fury (1981) which had as its members Greg Smith (Who later formed Addictive), Manuel Tecson and a few other lads from school at Blacktown. We played one gig in a band comp and some parties. I then mucked around with some dudes from Berala who were playing Mainly Judas Priest covers (1982). Can't remember what I did after that, but I in 1984/85 I was jamming with Steve & Mad Mick which was the beginning of what finally ended up as Mortal Sin. I met Wayne Campbell (original Mortal Sin drummer) on a train during a huge thunderstorm, when a lightning strike hit our train. I was on my way home from a rehearsal and he heard some metal coming out of my ghetto blaster. We hooked up and I jammed with his band Wizzard, who were playing Iron Maiden inspired music. The guitarist from Wizzard was Keith Krstin and he and Wayne liked my growling vocals but the other guys from Wizzard wanted more of a Bruce Dickinson type vocal, so Wayne, Keith & Myself began Mortal Sin a week later. Some other things you probably didn't know about me: I used to publish a monthly Collectibles magazine called Collectorholics. I also published two books about Olympic Pins at the time of the Sydney 2000 Olympics and was widely regarded as the "Guru" of Olympic pin collecting. Stranger than fiction! I am also the longest serving Dream Theater fan in AUSTRALIA. I received a Majesty demo from drummer Mike Portnoy back in 1986, when he asked to purchase "Mayhemic Destruction" after he read about it in Metal Forces magazine and I've been a fan ever since. 20 years!! I met Mike in 1996 when he came to Australia for a drum clinic at Parramatta Golf Club and he signed my demo and was amazed I still had it. Fucking cool drummer!
