There has never been any question about whether or not Morgan Evans would have a career in music. The Newcastle singer-songwriter says writing, playing and performing music has been an all-consuming passion and need for as long as he can remember.
Now in 2012, having signed a major record deal with Warner Music Australia, the 26-year-old believes he can finally describe his music career as "official". Morgan's new five-track EP, Live Each Day, released in January, is proof positive that talent, belief and persistence is a
winning combination.
"I started playing piano when I was five, got my first guitar at thirteen and started gigging straight away," he laughs.
When you're around Morgan Evans, his excitement about the future is palpable. He has racked up more career milestones than many performers manage in a lifetime - including award nominations, a #1 single and #1 video, and touring performances with Taylor Swift,
Brooks & Dunn, Thirsty Merc, Shannon Noll and more. He cut his teeth as front-man and guitar slinger for multi-award winning local rock trio, Solver, whose accolades include Best Rock Act and Artist of the Year at the 2006 MusicOz Awards.
Morgan's triumphant win a few months later at the 2007 Telstra Road to Tamworth Grand Final propelled his already fast-rising career into high gear. The prize included a trip to Nashville, where he was invited to perform in front of 68,000 fans at the CMA Music Festival in LP Field.
He recorded his debut single, Big Skies, in Nashville and released it later that year to great acclaim and success, hitting #1 on the ARIA Country Music Chart, #1 on the National Hot Country Airplay Chart, and #4 on the ARIA Australian Artists Airplay Chart. His video, filmed on a Newcastle beach, also went to #1 on the National CMC Video Chart.
In 2008, Morgan received two Golden Guitar nominations for New Talent of the Year and Video of the Year, and threw himself into a relentless touring schedule. He played to thousands of music lovers across the nation as special guest on Brooks & Dunn's sold-out Australian Arena Tour; joined Californian star Gary Allan and Canadian Roots Artist of the Year Corb Lund on the National "Living Hard" Tour, the inaugural CMC Rocks the Snowys Festival 2008, the massive Deni Ute Muster Festival and ended the year entertaining the troops in East Timor at Christmas.
In 2009, Morgan was handpicked by US superstar, Taylor Swift, to join her on her first sold-out Australian Tour, which Morgan describes as one of the more eye-opening touring experiences to date. In the time since, he has performed in all corners of Australia on festival bills, with huge local and international stars, continually honing his impressive live chops.
"I look up to artists like Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift and Keith Urban, because I go to their shows and see the kind of connection they have with their fans," he says. "That's something I'm always striving for when I'm writing songs and performing".
In late 2011, Morgan signed a deal with Warner Music Australia, heading into the studio to record his five-track EP, Live Each Day, with Golden Guitar-winning Producer of the Year, Matt Fell.
Live Each Day shows the breadth of Morgan's artistry, from the arena-ready title track and first single, to the honky-tonk groove of Pieces of You, the edgy Springsteen-esque Freedom Like This (penned by Nashville-based Aussie, Jedd Hughes, who also plays guitar on the track), to the catchy, foot-stomping Song for the Radio. The fifth track is a quieter, more reflective version of Morgan's #1 single, Big Skies.
"The title track, Live Each Day, is about not getting caught up in things that don't matter", he smiles. "It's a lesson I'm still learning. Like it says in the lyrics – you can't stop the world, so live each day like it's your last."
