//history

The story of monophox can be told fast but also very slowly. It begins with high expectations, a great start and is struggling then.

Let’s choose an intermediate speed: when monophox started they were big pretty soon. The band looked good, played like the devil, wrote awesome songs that nobody could ignore and was in a constant movement: new songs, more live shows. After a self-produced EP, which was sold very well, the band’s next goal was to record a complete album. First hampered but in the end improved by changes in the band things delayed, as it is the case usually– probably it has to be. To record the LP monophox went to Guido Lucas at Bluebox – Studio in Troisdorf, for their sound the perfect match. The Songs where on the one hand rough and smashing but on the other hand transparent leaving a lot of space for their beauty and the dignity of the melodies. But monophox was caught by the desire for perfection which earlier choose whole albums of bands like the Beach Boys or My Bloody Valentine for victim. The band rearranged themselves and overruled the finished album to rerecord it in a time consuming process on their own. Animated by the vision to do everything right, monophox lost themselves in arrangements, accumulations of guitars and ballast, which more and more ended in itself and glued the song like papier-mâché. The album was ok but monophox were still not satisfied with this version, too. But they had already spent too much time, power and money and only wanted to finish this project. So they decided to release the record. Many people who followed the band closely where somehow disenchanted by the way it sounds, looks, and feels. So the events began to decrease, monophox almost disappeared, playing less and less concerts. Then drummer Eric left the band. monophox could have chosen this very low point to be end. Knowing to have failed on the own talent and their own huge claims and expectations.

Instead they are still here and here again. If there was something, that monophox could not demonstrate with their debut-album, they do not care anymore. Failure is also a chance, these words are often heard. But most don’t take this chance, use it to learn and change it into something new and positive. Mercifully monophox took the last junction and instead of slipping into frustration and mediocrity they recorded a new album, the second one.

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear: an alteration of the warning sign which remembers drivers to watch the correct proportion of rear-view mirrors and reality. To talk in pictures and to analyze how important the old hippie- problem is for monophox – how difficult it is to break on through to the other side – would be boring, as well as to think, what would be on the other side respectively behind this mirror? Their own history? Expectations? Success? The result of monophox self-reflection is wiping of the old and realignment. Close doors and open new ones, do not always try to explain and repair the past (it is enough to understand it) and in result monophox recorded their debut album for the third time.

The thing that was and always has been good on their sound suddenly is the only thing that is left. At no point this record tilts out, it is always limited to the necessary. Sometimes it is just guitar, bass, drums and vocals comparable to Weezer and The Get Up Kids at their best times. Sometimes a lonesome piano, sometimes, just like “just good, one day” it is a bunch of blowers and other stuff that transforms similar to David Bowie (early 70ies) or Cockney Rebel, humorous and beautiful pop songs into artful drawings. The funny, friendly voice of Tobias Mecklinger is not resigning instead it is relaxed enough to catch one more time. The whole band is pure harmony and plays tight like the fingers of a fist are.

The question that the business, the press or the orientation to success might ask seems simple: who needs monophox nowadays? Their latest record wipes it away. If someone ever needed monophox, if they are still needed – what means need? But it is great that they still are here. That they did not quit, what would be much easier at times. That they made another record, which is worthwhile, everything they have gone through and even going much further. The band has claimed their sound not only in the head but also brought it to reality. For people who want to make it easy for themselves: yes they sound a little bit like this band…and similar to the other. In the end it is “only” Independent Rock Music. But everybody that takes these 41 minutes of time and listens carefully might recognize that monophox does it different. Going further and being more. They allow themselves to recognize the borders of everything that is Indie-Rock (which is everything) as not being there, step by step.
