For years a fictitious, ahem, conceptual record label; life was finally breathed into Mister Tramp Records in September 2006, with the aim of promoting some of the best sounds emerging from Scotland’s vibrant music scene.

With little money – but ample enthusiasm, taste, good-looks and chocolate biscuits – Mister Tramp began releasing records. And our first four have met with critical acclaim…

Evan Crichton cut his teeth playing with John Peel favourites Pariah and The Sky at Night before emerging as a talented singer-songwriter in 2006. Evan’s debut album “Bright our Broken Days” and live performances, including supporting Seth Lakeman, Stephen Fretwell, Biffy Clyro, Aereogramme and Pete and the Pirates, gained widespread praise; while Evan himself won more dubious plaudits from the Scotsman.

“Evan Crichton may be in the top 50 most eligible men in Scotland according to The Scotsman newspaper, but more importantly his debut EP 'Bright our Broken Days’ finds his sparkling vocal and song writing skills coming to the fore. Opener ‘Cracks’ sets the tone with downbeat backing but soaring delivery and tale of hope, and throughout the record this mood and vein carries on. ‘Shine For Me Hal’ has a woozy church organ intro and there’s a lot of different instruments peppering this album, however, they all pale compared to Evan’s voice” – 4/5 – is this music?

Evan is currently working on his second album.

Your Sound's Artist of The Month for November 2008, Mitchell Museum are a frantic blend of distortion, melody and fun.

Mitchell Museum's new single, "Warning Bells" is now on sale from Mister Tramp Records. Complete with 4 FREE downloads for your mp3 player, the strictly ltd 7" single is £3 (which includes postage and packaging) and can be purchased by clicking the button below.

“Tumbling on next, the lovable bundle of keyboard-driven madness that is Mitchell Museum. Half of this lot were in the wonderful Afterchristmas and the good news is they sound not dissimilar. They gallop through their set with a boundless energy: a frenzied Grandaddy anxious to impress. And when, at one point, Cammy sings: "Look at me. I'm a Catherine Wheel." You suspect, he's probably correct” – The Fly

You Already Know are an instrumental metal group from Glasgow. They make epic, cinematic music and take their name from a rather mysterious quote provided by one of the bands favourite filmmakers, David Lynch.

You Already Know formed in 2005, but after supporting the Deftones at the Carling Academy in Glasgow in front of a 2000-strong, sell-out crowd, the band felt driven to push themselves and their music into new territories. All old material was dropped, vocals were dropped, and an EP was pushed aside in favour of developing a new sound, a new focus and a new set of targets.

“They construct a soundscape big enough to drown in - think dollops of Mogwai drizzled with Metallica. Many of the guitar riffs are refreshingly and utterly shameless. YAK also definitively prove the case that sometimes no lyrics are best” – The Fly

"You Already Know play an epic brand of heavy, technically-accomplished, instrumental rock, with a potent pop heart beating strongly at its core" - The Scotsman

New album Stop Whispering on sale now.

Mister Tramp released “Off The Beaten Track”, a compilation featuring 12 of Scotland’s best up-and-coming artists, in September 2007.

“It must have been blatantly obvious to even the most casual of observers that we were going to love this compilation album. Off The Beaten Track offers us proof that Scottish music is undergoing something of a renaissance at present” – 5/5 – is this music?

"A dozen of Scotland’s most delicious new acts including Frightened Rabbit, Beerjacket, Evan Crichton and Galchen shine on this classy showcase from this potential-filled new label" - The List

And a rather lovely quote from one of our artists…

“Throughout Off The Beaten Track, all the donated tracks have a strong sense of identity, usually obviously Scottish, but without any flag-waving pride - more a connection to where and when the music was made, thus revealing it’s nationality. This music was very obviously not recorded in Abbey Road, but in small independent studios, bedrooms and kitchens in central Scotland, often engineered by the musicians themselves. However, although sometimes hand-made, these recordings are not inherently ‘kitchen sink’. They are not derivative of the (often mundane) situation in which they were made. Instead, the ‘site’ at which these were created seems to have served as a springboard, allowing the artists to write and record at their will, with a spontaneity and freedom that can be lost as soon as a large studio bill comes into play. This gives Off The Beaten Track a natural diversity, a rich and rare mixture of national awareness and galactic innovation." – Martin John Henry

Our Off The Beaten Track gigs continue to showcase some of Scotland’s best artists and hidden gems. Inspired by these talented folk, we plan to release a second Off The Beaten Track compilation in 2009.

We also like to organise the occasional big shiny event! Rock the Boat 2007, at The Ferry, featured live performances from Evan Crichton, Afterchristmas, You Already Know and The State Broadcasters, followed by Kaput! and De Rosa DJs.

Rock the Boat 2009 featured live sets from De Rosa, Evan Crichton, You Already Know and Mitchell Museum, with DJ sets from Pretty Ugly, Gargleblast and the Trampettes.

As well as being “probably the most fun you can have on a boat” this event also raises money for the charity Shelter.
