THE MINIONS – Six Chords / Have You Got A Knife? (Yola) – More right to the bone energy from Bolton, and a classic contradiction of a double A side. Six Chords is energetic punk-pop with a gang of trumpets and saxophones and don't go thinking ah, ska punk again, no no on! They got brass but they're not down that ska road. Bit of a Blaggers ITA vibe actually, touch of King Prawn maybe, all very Northern and not to be messed with, bit of raw poppy Stiff Little Fingers/early Jam and solitude going against the grain. Raw infectious punk pop energy and speed, bit of backs against the wall Northern soul in there, this is good – right got them nailed then with all their unfashionable energy and drive. Hang on! What's this? Have You Got A Knife is off on a completely different train, still very obviously the same band/gang and a riff that kicks off and the brass driving and you think right, until the rough gruff voice starts telling a tale of stress on a railway station in a kind of frantic spoken word John Cooper Clark in a bad rush to get in a fight with Detective Inspector Gene Hunt kind of way. I like this band, fine fine double A-sided single, proper Northern gang of punks

This is the second band I've reviewed recently that's aimed for a resurgence of the post-hardcore tunefulness of 80s American bands like Husker Du and the Replacements, a welcome return in my opinion. The Minions do pretty well at it, with Six Chords having a catchy Bob Mould feel, throwing in a noisy horn bit at the end to keep things interesting. Have You Got a Knife has a harder edge which is surprising given the prominence of, I swear, a slide whistle on the verses. This type of thing would make for a nice soundtrack prior to going down the pub or something equally mindless and fun.

This Bolton eight piece outfit may on the face of it, allude to the world of ska and punk - but here they emerged with the brutally rocking "Six Chords". It's a brassy, heavy, skater friendly slice of punky pop and anthemic guitars. The Minions thrive on radio friendly soundbites that snatch swift references from Californian rock, somehow adding a little bit of Mexico there and a dollop of Lancashire folk there. The rather brilliant "Have You Got A Knife" is their version of "Parklife" set around northern, hoodie infested back streets - genius. Minions have all the hallmarks of a classic band in the making.
