Knowledge Interview oct 2005

Having shot to prominence in recent years as part of the Accelerated Culture/Sidewinder Crew, MC Presha is ready to show the rest of the world that he is ready to step into the big time.

The Northampton based artist made his first real Breakthrough back in 2001 when he appeared at the legendary Sanctuary Venue in Milton Keynes. Since then, Preshas name has become well-established on the Midlands Drum and Bass circuit and even further a field with appearances at events including One Nation, Slammin Vinyl, Transmission/ Subdub also performing in europe and the u.s regularly, and last year received Best MC Newcomer at the Drum and Bass Awards.*

But despite his success, the ambitious lyricist still remembers how it was that he came to find himself in this position.

I started off doing local things in Northampton at the age of 17 remembers Presha.

Then one day it just clicked and I would go to events just to get on the mic and say my piece. After that, I got involved with Sidewinder, which in those days was just starting out in a small club called Madisons that only held 200 people. They outgrew that and moved to a new venue but that used to get rammed every week as well, and that was when the promoters started thinking about using the Sanctuary. Since then, we havent looked back and theyve stuck with me throughout as one of the original residents.

Last year, however, the super venue Sanctuary was bulldozed and a whole generation of rave memories along with it. But, according to Presha, the enthusiasm for the music still lives on in the area, with events having returned to Milton Keynes at the Empire nightclub.

For me, the Sanctuary was the base of rave and if you have that on your doorstep then its going to influence a lot of people to get into the music. This whole area has always had a massive rave following and Im pleased that events are coming back now after a break.

Presha has also maintained the local connection after he linked up recently with Kinda Funky radio in Derby alongside MC Biggie, and has also been doing shows on kunningmindz.com, did a weekly show on Kool Live in Birmingham and do guest shows on various pirates around the country including District FM and Silk FM, but it his appearances at raves that have marked this MC out as one to watch.

I always try to have a theme to each lyric and think of subjects that people can relate to and say Yeah, Ive been through that, he reveals.

I slow it down and try to actually get a message across in my lyrics because thats really important to me. I listen to all the other MCs and theres a lot of patterns that have been done before. Quite a few young guys try and be like Eksman, Skiba and Shabba but thats their style - the key is to find something different and unique that no one else is doing.

And its not just in his performing that Presha is thinking of the next generation, having been working with fellow Sidewinder resident Dollar in Northampton for the Education and Youth Services scheme that seeks to give disadvantaged young people better opportunities in life. Originally set up by DJ Swan E, other drum and bass artists including Ellis Dee, Ash-a-Tak and Futurebound have also got involved in a variety of locations across the UK.

We teach them how to mix and they get the chance to produce music on the latest equipment, Presha explains.

Its good because instead of being on the streets theyre doing something positive by moving on to college or a job. Its a wicked feeling seeing someone with serious issues completely turned around by what we are doing.

But despite this, his main ambition remains the same as it ever was to make it to the pinnacle of the scene and stay there.

I had someone come up to me a couple of weeks ago and say to me Youre the reason I started listening to Drum and Bass and that blew me away that I can have that much of an impact on them, he says.

*Its all about the adrenalin buzz, that comes with getting up on stage and performing. I have also been making some tracks, which is something that I definitely want to do a lot more of in the future, but Im the sort of geezer who takes every day as it comes and sees what happens.
