Hello, Myspace is a bit annoying now isn't it? It used to be good but it's not so good anymore. We don't use it very much because well, it's practically impossible to use. Our main website is at www.maxinekauterband.com, please go there for downloadable music and the ability to listen without needing to sign in to Myspace, the worst website in the world. We are also on Facebook at www.facebook.com/maxinekauterband and we'd love to see you there.
MKB
Sydney-based singer songwriter Maxine Kauter is a musician not afraid to wear her influences on her sleeve. Growing up in Sydney's southern suburbs during the grunge explosion of the 90's the independent spirit of that music deeply affected her and has provided her music and career with its unwavering self-determination.
The fiercely alternative sounds of songwriters Hope Sandoval, Cowboy Junkies and Sonic Youth provided the inspiration for her haunting and familiarly catchy indie pop and sent her searching for their roots. There are hints of Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell to her stripped back and intensely literate songs with thoughtful and coherent band arrangements recalling at times those of Lou Reed and at others Mazzy Star.
Maxine began performing as a soloist and it was here that she developed her impressive voice. Today the Maxine Kauter Band's sound serves that outstanding voice and its personal and powerful quality. It is music that moves, literally and emotionally with the considerable talents of Stephen Beverley on drums and Shannon Haritos on bass providing an aching counterpoint to the songs and vocals.
In 2011 the Maxine Kauter Band release their new record, Alibech the Hermit, taking its name from a book in Boccacio's Decameron it reveals the songwriter's love of all things written and spoken, imagined and mythical. It is an album about the inner world, the world in the mind, similar to that visited by the reader in books. Littered with strange echoing noises and analogue tape it is a completely self-funded independent release and a testament to the very talented indie record makers working in Sydney. Alibech the Hermit is a world that rewards the attentive listener with a beautifully crafted and stoically alternative realm.
Alibech the Hermit will be released on Thursday 17 March 2011 at Raval in Wentworth Street Surry Hills with special guests James Edgar Francis and Manger (Zoe Vaughan and Brian Campeau)

The angelically voiced Maxine Kauter opened day three. Sounding like a cross between Sarah Blasko and Mazzy Star, Kauter was mellow and enchanting. With more texture to her backing band she is definitely an artist to keep watch on. Her cover of NWA's Straight Outta Compton showed her humour and how broad her influences were.
Peats Ridge Performance Review, Drum Media 13 January 09
Every now and again Australia offers up a female musician that is able to combine a polished pop sound with a tougher rock edge from the Divinyls through to Little Birdy and the Howling Bells. Maxine Kauter is now part of this tradition. Though it's not particularly muscular rock, Kauter balances her ethereal vocals with her rhythm section's driving beats. You hear echoes of her training as a jazz guitarist, but the instrumentation is never overwhelming. Kauter's great talent is keeping things sparse and simple
Drum Media EP Review,
Maxine Kauter and her deliciously gravely voice opened proceedings this evening. Armed only with and acoustic guitar, she showed off an enjoyable array of material, stripped back in the absence of her band. The performance was in a similar vein to Missy Higgins in the nicest way possible - simple, clean guitar and a memorable vocal delivery. And what a flawless voice Kauter has. Her songs showed off sublime personality and confident character and her delivery was charming. Kauter is obviously at ease on stage and covered Ani Difranco's Anticipate in a style to rival the original. A performer certainly deserving of a later, longer time slot.
Drum Media, Performance Review
"Heck I'm giving you 5. What a voice you've got! Way to effortlessly outshine all the other singer/songwriter tracks I've heard today, by like ten gazillion!"
Nicole Cheek, triple j -Triple J Unearthed Review of "Lies" Rating: 5/5
"Great rolling bluesy rock track. It's a little rough around the edges but shows Maxine Kauter to be a very promising up-and-comer."
Dan Buhagiar, triple j Triple J Unearthed Review of "Lies" Rating: 4/5
"A solid indie rock track in the vein of Juliana Hatfield. The music is very tight and energetic. Maxine Kauter has a lovely voice and she is really pushing it here to make it fit in well with the music. The song is short sweet and to the point thus it retains the rock energy and doesn't go stale. Top work!"
Tomatrax, SuperUser Review of "Cold with you" Rating: 4/5
