Chitarrista cantante, le sue prime esperienze, legate al recupero del repertorio tradizionale della montagna pistoiese, lo porteranno a conoscere, nei primi anni '80, la cantante ricercatrice Caterina Bueno con la quale collabora per una decina d'anni.
Fra i suoi collaboratori c’è in quel periodo un chitarrista sardo di grande talento: Alberto Balia (Ritmia, Argia). E’ grazie a lui che Maurizio riprende lo studio sistematico della chitarra e approfondisce quelle tecniche che lo porteranno alla formazione del suo attuale stile chitarristico; è di quel periodo il trio NURAGES con Alberto e il mandolinista pugliese Mimmo Epifani (Eugenio Bennato), con cui nell’89 vince la prima edizione dell’ On the road festival di Pelago.
Dalle ceneri di questo gruppo nasce nel ’95 il “Maurizio Geri Swingtet “, formazione che prende spunto dalla tradizione zingara francese ( manouche ) per rivisitare compositori italiani e proporre brani originali;
Unico gruppo italiano del genere presente al prestigioso festival jazz “ Django Reinhardt “ di Samois nel giugno 2000. Sono usciti a suo nome due cd dal titolo Manouche e dintorni (felmay 97) e A cielo aperto (Visage ’01); Attualmente, oltre Maurizio, lo Swingtet è composto da: Leonardo Boni e Luca Giovacchini (chitarre), Paolo Ghetti (contrabbasso), Ruben Chaviano Fabian (violino), ma in passato hanno suonato nel gruppo anche: Klaus Lessmann (clarinetto),Nicola Vernuccio (contrabbasso), Chris Brashear (violino) e Enzo Biordi (fisarmonica).
Fondamentale è l’incontro con il concittadino organettista Riccardo Tesi che nel ’94 da vita al quartetto BANDITALIANA che vede al fianco di Maurizio, Ettore Bonafè (percussioni, vibrafono) e
Claudio Carboni (sax), questa formazione lo stimola a
ricerche timbriche e soluzioni musicali nuove, a cavallo fra tradizione e sperimentazione, elementi peculiari della personalità artistica di Tesi.
Il disco Un ballo liscio (Silex ’97) racconta il fenomeno del ballo liscio italiano attraverso i vari stili che lo hanno generato e contaminato già colonna sonora del film La lingua del santo di C.Mazzacurati, i due successivi :Banditaliana (il manifesto ’98) miglior disco dell’anno per la rivista Folk Bullettin e Thapsos (il manifesto ’01) acclamato in Francia con il “bravo” di Trad magazine e lo “choc” della Musique sono occasione per Maurizio di affermarsi anche come cantante e interprete di ballate tradizionali ( tre sorelle, maggio ) e di canzoni composte da Jean-Marie Carlotti e Carlo Muratori (premio Ciampi ’98). Il disco Acqua, foco e vento ( viaggio nella memoria musicale della toscana minore , il manifesto 2003) prodotto dalla provincia di Pistoia per la regia di Angelo Savelli, ha rappresentato per Geri la chiusura ideale di un cerchio dove il rigore antropologico si congiunge con la composizione e l'arrangiamento .
Nel 2003 lo Swingtet è chiamato a partecipare allo spettacolo teatrale In My Life con Maria Cassi e Leonardo Brizzi, prodotto da Ernesto De Pascale.
La recente collaborazione con la cantante Lu Colombo porta lo Swingtet a confrontarsi col repertorio “canzone” ed a registrare nel 2004 l’Uovo di Colombo (Delta 2004).
Dopo la vittoria al controfestival di Mantova e i riconoscimenti in numerosi festival internazionali (Celtic Connection, Ottawa blues fest, Festival d’etè de Quebec) è il momento per BANDITALIANA di registrare il terzo album: Lune, pubblicato da Il Manifesto nel dicembre 2004.
Recente è il progetto Chitarre Zimarre che lo vede al fianco di Beppe Gambetta in un viaggio fra le culture
migranti ed il repertorio a plettro dell’Italia di inizio secolo.
Numerose le collaborazioni con musicisti delle più
svariate aree, Nik Becattini, Maria Cassi, Ginevra Di Marco, Alessandro Di Puccio, Luca Di Volo, Beppe Gambetta, Elena Ledda, Piero Leveratto, Francesco Magnelli, Gabriele Mirabassi, Mauro Palmas, Daniele Sepe, Liliana Tamberi, Jimmy Villotti…. così come i concerti nei festival di tutta Europa Australia e nord America.
Il suo stile chitarristico fonde le tematiche legate alla musica etnica mediterranea con il fraseggio e l’improvvisazione della musica swing-manouche.
E' prossima l'uscita del nuovo cd "Ancora un ballo", un lavoro incentrato sulla canzone d'autore dove Maurizio è autore dei testi e delle musiche, swing, beguine e rumbe si mescolano a parole "inconsuete".perchè inconsuete?

MAURIZIO GERI
Guitarist , singer, composer, his first experiences were bonded to the traditional Tuscan music of the mountain near Pistoia and its revival, thanks to this way, he knew in the early ’80 the folk singer Caterina Bueno and they played together for ten years. With them played also a great guitarist with lots of talent coming from Sardinian called Alberto Balia (Ritmia, Argia). Thanks to him Maurizio starts to play guitar and to study systematically this instrument in depth developing technique and forming his actually guitaristic style. To this period belongs the trio NURAGES with Alberto Balia and the mandolinist from Puglia Mimmo Epifani (Eugenio Bennato). In 1989 the Trio Nurages won the first edition of Pelago “On The Road Festival”.
From the ash of this band born the MAURIZIO GERI SWINGTET in 1995, which is inspired by the traditional French gypsy music (Manouche) but proposes original tunes and Italian traditional Swing. MAURIZIO GERI SWINGTET was in 2000 the unique Italian group that performed at the prestigious “Django Reinhardt Festival” in Samois sur Seine near Paris. MAURIZIO GERI SWINGTET’s discography includes two releases: “Manouche e dintorni” for the Italian label Felmay (1997) and “A cielo aperto” for the label Visage (2001). Actually, apart from Maurizio (lead guitar), other musicians enjoy this band: Leonardo Boni and Luca Giovacchini (guitars), Ruben Chaviano Fabian (violin), Paolo Ghetti (double bass), others are welcome guests such as Klaus Lessmann (clarinet), Enzo Biordi (accordion), Chris Brashear (violin) and Nicola Vernuccio (double bass). It is when Maurizio met a fellow citizen called Riccardo Tesi who played accordion, that his career opened different opportunities, that same year, 1994, Riccardo Tesi got a new musical project under way BANDITALIANA a quartet formed by him, one of the best accordion players in Italy, beside Maurizio (voice and guitars), Ettore Bonafè (percussions and vibraphone) and Claudio Carboni (sax). This band spurs Maurizio on new timbre research and musical solution, between tradition and experiment, both elements which are peculiar to Riccardo’s artistic personality. The CD “Un ballo liscio” (Silex 1997) tells about Italian couple dance phenomenon through different styles which has generated it and also contaminated it, this work became the soundtrack of an Italian movie “La lingua del Santo” of the director Carlo Mazzacurati. With BANDITALIANA Maurizio Geri made also other releases such as the homonymous “Banditaliana” for the Italian label Il Manifesto 1998, best CD of the year for the magazine Folk Bulletin and the CD “Thapsos” (Il Manifesto 2001) very applauded in France with other recognition such as “Bravo” by Trad Magazine and “Choc” by another French magazine called Musique. These are special opportunities for Maurizio to become established also as singer and performer of traditional ballads such as Tre sorelle and Maggio as well as with new songs written by the artists Jean Marie Carlotti or Carlo Muratori (Italian winner of Piero Ciampi Premium in 1998). The CD “Acqua, foco e vento” (a travel in the musical memories of the Pistoia’s mountains and minor Toscany ) was the result of the play produced by the Province of Pistoia’s Assessorato alla Cultura (Culture Council) with the production of director Angelo Savelli, this work represents for Mr. Geri the ideal closing of a circle where anthropological strictness joins up composition and arrangement.
In 2003 THE SWINGTET has engaged to take part to the play “In My Life” with Maria Cassi e Leonardo Brizzi produced by Ernesto de Pascale.
The recent collaboration with the singer Lu Colombo takes THE SWINGTET to a deeply confrontation with “song’s repertory” and to register the CD “L’uovo di Colombo” (Delta 2004).
In 2004 BANDITALIANA won the Controfestival in Mantova and that same year, this band received numerous awards from international festivals such as Celtic Connection, Ottawa Blues Festival, Festival d’été de Quebec among the others. This is the moment for BANDITALIANA to carry out another album entitled “Lune” for the Italian label Il Manifesto in December 2004.
In 2005 started another project called CHITARRE ZIMARRE side by side with the guitarist Beppe Gambetta from Genoa, which represents a trip among cultures of emigration and plectrum repertory of Italy in the beginning of XX century.
Maurizio Geri has performed in many festivals all over Europe, Canada, Australia and Argentina, his career includes performances with many musicians from different musical areas such as, Nick Becattini, Zoran Predin, Maria Cassi, Ginevra Di Marco, Alessandro Di Puccio, Luca Di Volo, Beppe Gambetta, Elena Ledda, Piero Leveratto, Francesco Magnelli, Daniele Mirabassi, Mauro Palmas, Daniele Sepe, Stefano Melone, Liliana Tamberi, Jimmy Villotti….Mr. Geri’s guitaristic style mixes ethnic themes of Mediterranean music with phrases and improvising of the swing manouche world.
