Born and raised in the vibrant musical world of Cape Breton on Canada's Atlantic coast. Mattie recorded and toured with many East Coast Artist such as The Rankin Family, Rita MacNeil, The Barra MacNeils, Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, Bruce Guthro, Gordie Sampson, Howie MacDonald and helped form the band Beolach.
Mattie felt is creative energy moving in a different direction and decided to move to Scotland. Five years on now he has found himself a home at the heart of the UK folk scene. Appearing with many of its brightest stars such as, Karine Polwart, Shooglenifty, Kate Rusby, Unusual Suspects, Eliza Carthy, John McCusker, Phil Cunningham, Dean Owens and Aidan O'Rourke.
As a drummer, his big sound and rock solid groove are matched by surprising lyricism and sensitivity, and give an unmistakeable conviction and accessibility to the sound he makes with jazz/tango trio Tangalgo.
He is also an engineer and award-winning producer, most notably for rising singer/songwriter Karine Polwart (to whom he is married).
Mattie brings a power and sincerity to everything he does.

Hi all and welcome to a wee bit of space I have claimed. With this site I wish to communicate with anyone who enjoys creativity in any form. We are all constantly creative, if we realize it or not. Believe it, it's true.

So my friends list below. funny one this; it is lovely to be asked by someone you've never heard of from across an ocean you've never been or from someone I haven't seen in years or from someone who has influenced my music in some way or another. Receiving these invites from honest folks who like what I do or say makes me feel very happy. And if you've come to this site and enjoyed the music and want to be my pal, GREAT, let's be pals, hopefully we can meet up sometime or communicate on a similar level.
Now, if it is your aim to mearly get onto another friend list to hopefully build up a massive spamfest, please, please don't put me in the position of having to deny you. i don't like doing it, but I will.
I really enjoy using this tool for finding new music, and it's been great fun and successfull. There is so much amazing talent in this world and this is one way to find folks you would never hear of otherwise. So if you are reading this because I have requested to be your friend, have faith that I am totally into what you are doing and want to share my "find" with other like minds.
