Each and every exceptional artist tends to be equal parts charmed, introspective, captivating and complex. Greg Loftis is no exception. Growing up on a small farm that rests on a hill in rural Nebraska, he spent much of his time dreaming about what may lie beyond this tranquil landscape. He found himself looking from a vantage point that knew no boundaries. It was then that Greg first became inspired to write and then record his thoughts on a home recorder. Not long after, he traded a friend some comic books for an old guitar and his soul was born.
Eventually he found his way into the famed Omaha Saddle Creek Record scene where he was welcomed warmly. He formed Malpais and recorded his first record "Luka is Leaving New York. The record quickly caught on locally and he signed a deal with an independent record label. The album saw 4 star reviews from both Alternative Press and Spin Magazine and their single "Freeze the Soul" was in regular rotation on XM Radio.
At the same time the record was receiving so much attention and positive feedback, the record label he so recently inked a deal with went bankrupt. Although his debut album was receiving rave reviews, the absence of a functioning label made nationwide success nearly impossible. Compounding the difficulties with his record label, Loftis' desire to independently embark on a nationwide tour and his attempts to promote the record on their own met resistance from his band.
Feeling lost and frustrated, Greg decided to shelve the album and begin a journey across the globe in search of direction and inspiration. He returned a few years later and found a home in New York City's music scene. The creative pulse was electrocuted by the city's energy and his desire to create and perform again was too strong to ignore.
An unexpected placement on MTV's "Hard Times of RJ Barker" has inspired Greg to reach out to a few of his old yet wildly successful rock musician friends. Still an urban legend of sorts back in Omaha, he decided to return to his roots and begin work on a new project with the people who embraced his talent the first time around.
In his own words, Greg Loftis is "just a lyricist trying to resonate with his audience" but his gentle poet's soul, mild demeanor and unmistakeable aura are as contagious as his melodies. He is devoted to living his questions in order to find his answers. In Greg Loftis' world, "it is hollow and vain to try and sit down to write if you have not stood up to live."
