What can be said about Madeleine Slate?
the five-foot, baby- faced, organic beauty is a jaw-dropping
singer/songwriter from Toronto that is sure to turn heads.
Packing a strong voice in her tiny body is not the only reason an
audience will pause. With Madeleine behind the mic, gone is the day
that delivery alone holds weight. Having a sincere understanding of
emotion naturally conveyed in each lyric, accompanied by her hypnotic
guitar licks, she has officially reset the standards of music.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Madeleine Slate is the youngest of four
siblings, all with their hands in the melting pot of the entertainment
world. Older siblings Gavin and Alexandra Slate are both
singer/songwriters, and eldest sister Stephanie got her Master’s
Degree in Theatre.
In spring 2007,
Madeleine entered into a singer/songwriter contest judged by Juno
Award winning band Billy Talent in Toronto and walked away with first prize
that included a day in a studio that has been used by neighboring
artists such as Nelly Furtado. This was only the beginning though.
People have said that in this industry you sometimes have to leave to
have your hometown welcome you, so 4 years ago for then 20 year old
Slate, Nashville was the chosen destination. After performing one
song at the open mic at The Bluebird Cafe life has been a whirlwind.
This entertainment world is all about being in the right place at the
right time and that she was.
Some could say that over the past 2 years Madeleine has become the
“songwriter’s songwriter” being invited up as the guest of Tony Arata
(Writer of Garth Brooks’ “The Dance” among other Garth cuts, Patty
Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, etc.), Gretchen Peters (Martina McBride’s
“Independence Day”, Bryan Adams’ “Cloud Number Nine” among many
others), Beth Nielson Chapman(Faith Hill’s “This Kiss” as well as
songs for Trisha Yearwood, Willie Nelson, etc), and Leslie Satcher
(George Strait’s “Troubadour”, Martina McBride’s “When God-Fearin’
Women get the Blues”, etc.) all on 5 separate occasions at the world
famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.
Much can be said about Madeleine’s future in the industry. In
February 09, Madeleine was handpicked by Producer Fred Mollin (Billy
Ray Cyrus, Dan Hill, Neil Diamond, etc) to produce a 3 song EP.
Looking at her will leave an audience puzzled by how someone so young
can articulate every emotion so concisely. Each arrangement is placed
perfectly in front of the other on top of the melodic strums of her
guitar, disarmingly enlisting the room into her resonance.
Personal lyrics combined with an unforced guitar style that is fueling
her equally gifted delivery-- one can only wait until Madeleine Slate
is named “the new face of the industry.”
