Luke’s song ‘Cleveland ‘was named by Nick Hornby as one of the Top Ten Songs of the Year, The Independent in the UK named the album, Blood’s Too Rich, as one of the Best Albums of 2008, while the Toronto Star named the album as the Number One Musical Moment of the Year.
Hornby says on his New York Times playlist blog: “Doucet’s album Blood’s Too Rich sounds to me as if it comes straight out of 1977 – not The Ramones/Talking Heads/Clash take on that year, but the Graham Parker/Dire Straits/Tom Petty version of it. Somehow, punk managed to reinvent rock music too, made it sound fresher and less pompous. Doucet is a terrific guitarist, as fluid and melodic as Mark Knopfler back in the day; but he’s a proper songwriter too. ‘The Comandante’ has even been accepted as a substitute for Queen, on a good day, and now we’re approaching the awards season it must stand every chance of picking up the coveted Non-Glads Song of the Summer prize.
Awards and celebrity attention aside, Doucet is in the business for one reason and that’s to play music. The songs on Blood’s Too Rich reflect the facts of life on the road, the necessarily nomadic life of a touring musician, and what it’s like to come home when that home has moved again. Doucet travels roads and musical history, and Blood’s Too Rich is also a journey through some of the finest musical influences each decade has to offer. Luke Doucet has moved from East to West, from edge to centre, but his music has always been a constant artistic home. As a landmark singer-songwriter in the Canadian indie landscape, Doucet has made his name as a first-rate guitarist and creative force, with four solo albums to date. His band, The White Falcon, includes Melissa McClelland, Rich Levesque and Gord Stevenson. The band’s namesake, the prominent white Gretsch guitar, has become Luke Doucet’s musical and visual calling card.
Luke’s impeccable instincts have also steered multiple projects by fellow Six Shooters NQ Arbuckle and Melissa McClelland, and most recently Rose Cousins, as well as albums by his former band Veal and several solo efforts. As an accomplished producer and respected voice, Luke’s involvement in all aspects of the craft has built a creative lodging for himself and other artists on Six Shooter Records.
