BOBO – Lieder von Liebe und Tod
In „White Wooden Houses“ begann einst die Rock-Karriere der Berliner Sängerin Bobo. Kennt man ihr neuestes Projekt, könnte man fragen: Wird Bobo jetzt brav? Denn ihre Begeisterung gilt den Volksliedern. Doch Bobo ist, zum Glück, wer sie ist, und so hält sie in den wunderbaren Arrangements des Musiktüftlers Sebastian Herzfeld verblüffende Neuentdeckungen längst vergessen geglaubter Weisen für uns bereit. Zauberhaft von Videoprojektionen und Schattenspielen begleitet ist ein Abend entstanden, an dem sich große Gefühle zu glockenklarem Gesang behaupten, Hoffen und Bangen, Liebe und Leid, Heimweh und Fernweh. Wenigstens drei Gründe gibt es, die dieses Konzertprojekt herausheben: Zum Ersten ist da die Stimme der Sängerin: zerbrechlich wirkend an manchen Stellen, dann wieder kraftvoll und sich behauptend. Ihre Präsenz auf der Bühne, ihre Ausstrahlung und Aura nehmen unweigerlich gefangen. Diese fast allen geläufigen Melodien interpretiert sie mit einer berührenden Schlichtheit und faszinierenden Hingabe, mit einer über- zeugenden Ehrlichkeit, mit großem Selbstverständnis und einem sanften, freundlichen, sehr warmherzigen Stolz, dass so manches dieser alten Lieder klingt, als hätte man es nie zuvor richtig gehört. Volksmusik also nur als Popsong? Nein. Denn Theatermusiker Sebastian Herzfeld hat sich dieser alten Lieder sehr behutsam ange- nommen. Hat sich ganz auf ihre ursprüngliche Schönheit verlassen. Hat sie mit Liebe und Respekt vom Staub der Jahre befreit. Hat ihnen mit bewundernswerter Stilsicherheit passgenau zwischen Folk, Jazz, Klassik, Pop & Stille neues Leben eingehaucht. In gleicher Weise hat Herzfeld eigene Kompositionen mit Ohrwurmcharakter zu Gedichten Goethes und Eichendorffs geschrieben, die bruchlos zu den bekannten Melodien passen. Alter Wein also nur in neuen Schläuchen? Nein. Denn die Musiker beherrschen ihre Kunst. Zu Recht wurden sie nomminiert für den Weltmusikpreis „RUTH“, sie wissen um das Geheimnis, dass wenige Töne manchmal eine viel größere Wirkung haben als ein fetter Sound. Sie besitzen das Können, mit sparsamster Instrumentierung einen Klangraum von suggestiver Wirkung zu schaffen. Bei manchem Lied wird man unsicher: Ist das jetzt ein unbekanntes Volkslied? Oder eine der Eigenkompositionen? Die Musiker bauen ihre eigene Welt. Aber ist das denn dann noch Tradition? Ja. Denn „Tradition ist nicht die Anbetung der Asche, sondern die Weitergabe des Feuers.“ Gustav Mahler
„Es ist ein ernst zu nehmender Anwärter auf das Album des Jahres, was die Berliner Sängerin Bobo uns unter dem Titel „Lieder von Liebe und Tod“ (Traumton 4504/Indigo) präsentiert. Deutsche Volkslieder, vor allem aber große deutsche Gedichte, überwiegend aus Klassik und Romantik, die von Sebastian Herzfeld kongenial vertont und extrem reduziert arrangiert wurden. Dabei arbeitet er durchaus eklektizistisch – mal klingt das nach einer Akustikversion von Pink Floyd, mal nach Filmmusik des Minimalisten Philip Glass –, und doch ist diese Musik vor allem eines: ein kunstvoll in Bewegung versetztes Bild, besser: eine vollendet theatrale Szene aus den Mitteln der Musik. Wie Bobo diese großartigen Texte interpretiert, ist von einer Klarheit und Aufrichtigkeit, die nicht nur die Ohren öffnet, sondern das, was all diesen Stücken in mythischer Tradition eingeschrieben ist: die Seele. Ihr Gesang ist eine Anleitung zur Empfindsamkeit. Diese ungewöhnlichen und nicht nur in kommerzieller Hinsicht sehr riskanten Aufnahmen sind durchweg von einer Brillanz, die einen förmlich erschauern lässt. Wer sich auf sie einlässt, wird dieses grandiose Miniatur-Musik-Theater, diesen Kosmos des Kleinen, unendlich bereichtert verlassen. Hier wurden Maßstäbe gesetzt.“

BOBO – Songs of Love and Death
It is a true labor of love that Berlin’s exceptional singer Bobo ("In White Wooden Houses") and sensitive theater musician Sebastian Herzfeld have ventured upon, a labor of love and dedication. It is the lifeblood of generations that is at stake on "Songs of Love and Death", because this is an album of new interpretations of German "Volkslieder" (folk songs) and poems. Expectations are high in a constellation like this, disaster lies in wait like a baited trap – and then Bobo commences to sing. And you don’t even notice how not only all of your doubts and preconceptions evaporate, but the whole system you intended to evaluate this CD with. Nothing is being "spruced up" or revamped here. This is much bigger, much more original - something special. Bobo, Herzfeld and clarinetist Anne Kaftan give this music roots and wings at the same time. A magical album: A voice as clear as a bell sings of hopes and fears, love and pain, homesickness and wanderlust, from that which is lost, that which has passed, of dreams that are deep and thoughts that are free.
Much is outstanding in this project – starting with Bobo’s incomparable voice: almost painfully fragile at times, then again full of overwhelming power. Her presence, charisma and aura are inescapably captivating. She interprets melodies almost everyone knows with a touching simplicity and fascinating devotion, a convincing honesty and deeply felt love. Add her gentle, friendly, warm-hearted pride, and suddenly you’re thinking you’re hearing some of these old songs for the first time.
Is it just folk music going pop? No. Sebastian Herzfeld has attended to these old songs carefully and with great respect, has relied completely on their original beauty. Freed them gently from years of dust and shown them to their new place between the styles – between tradition and jazz improvisation, between pop and the classical "Kunstlied".
His instrumentation, always teeming with character, invokes an atmosphere sometimes mystical and otherworldly, sometimes exuberant and full of relish. Herzfeld’s main instrument is a piano primed with surprises that he merges with bass clarinet and sounds from old metal. When Anne Kaftans lamenting soprano saxophone then seeks the duet with Bobo’s voice, an inimitable world of sound results, creating a maelstrom you can easily lose yourself in.
In the same way, Herzfeld has written his own catchy compositions to Goethe’s and Eichendorff’s poems, and they fit in with the familiar melodies just like they belong there. The three musicians have rightly been nominated for the "RUTH" world music awards; they possess the ability to create few but strong sounds of suggestive effect with the most sparing of instrumentations. With some songs you really can’t tell: Is this a little known folk song? Or one of their own compositions? Bobo, Sebastian Herzfeld and Anne Kaftan create their own world. Is it still tradition? Yes. As Gustav Mahler already knew: „Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.“
"A pretty serious candidate for album of the year is what vocalist Bobo presents us under the title of "Lieder von Liebe und Tod" /"Songs of Love and Death" (Traumton 4504/Indigo). German folk songs and most especially some of the great German poems, mostly classical or from the romantic era, are congenially put to music and very sparingly arranged here by Sebastian Herzfeld. He works absolutely eclectically - sometimes it sounds like an acoustic version of Pink Floyd, sometimes like Philip Glass's minimalistic film music - and yet this music is primarily one thing: a picture artistically set in motion, or even better: a scene of drama, perfected, crafted by means of music. Bobo interprets these magnificent lyrics with a clarity and sincerity that doesn't only open up the ears, but that which mythical tradition has inscribed in all these songs: the soul. Her singing is a guide to sensibility. These unusual and not only commercially risky recordings are of a consistant brilliance that literally gives you the shivers. Whoever opens up to this grandiose miniature music theater, this common people's cosmos , will leave it rewarded beyond imagination. New standards are being set here."
