Liam Fender was born in 1985 next to St. James’s Park in Newcastle Upon Tyne. The No. 1 single at the time was ‘Into The Groove’ by Madonna. His mother was a nurse and his father was a frustrated musician supporting the bingo in various working mens clubs around the Northeast. Born into a family of great footballers and avid Newcastle United supporters, Liam discovered early on that he had been born with two left legs. With that in mind, it seemed obvious that the likelihood of a career in such sport was about as likely as Margaret Thatcher standing down as prime minister.

Therefore, at the age of seven Liam decided he was going to be a pop star like… Jason Donovan, Michael Jackson or maybe even Phil Collins! He began writing songs and recording them onto his state of the art ‘Alba Ghetto Blaster’. Early titles included ‘Cool Rhythm’, ‘Sunshower’ and ‘Englishman in Jamaica’. Needless to say, these songs were pretty bloody awful and it wasn’t long before he was back to playing with his tin of cars and precious Ghostbuster toys!

At the age of twelve after many failed imaginary career paths (ice cream man, paramedic, Doctor Who, tv presenter etc), Liam got a drum kit for his birthday. For the next five or so years he practiced pretty hard and became quite good at it, which in turn saved him slightly from his ‘somewhat of geek’ status at school.

By the time he was sixteen, hormones had fully set in and Liam had went from being the little drummer boy to the obnoxious, whiny, teenage student. It was at this point where he fell in love once again with the idea of songwriting. What better a way to rid oneself of pathetic teenage angst than to have a melodic whine about how you’ll never pull that girl from the buskers night, or how you’re so messed up because you smoked cannibis and totally connected to Kurt Cobain!

Thankfully, this time passed and Liam got a job. He would spend the next four years blowing all his money on drink and cheap cigarettes. Losing weight and going yellow in many local bars! Until one day, he realised that perhaps if he didn’t pursue a career in something he liked, he would end up having to do a real job for the rest of his life.

So, here you have it, Liam Fender today. Writing, Recording, Gigging and working as a bar man.

Still skint but still trying!
