ENGLISH BIO :
Inspirational and eloquent Leila
With her last album TIY only a few months on the market, Leila Olivesi's third CD is already hailed a success in the uncompromising jazz music reviews. France Musiques fell under the spell of her compositions: "Ample scores, luxury of colours, domino tunes, improvisations with clear melodic lines: the ultimate seduction of a deeply felt creation precocious too!" In the larger circulation publication, Télérama, Michel Contat writes: "The duke is alive on the planet where Leïla, part French part Mauritanian artist chose to craft her music, akin to the sun painting the African sky at dusk." When she is not in one of the many summer jazz festivals, the critically acclaimed composer and pianist, Leila Olivesi performs at one venue after another, as the past July14th gig in Montpellier where the melodies rose from the stage to hover the ocean side.

Paris born Leïla Olivesi is an honour graduate of the famous French 'Conservatoire' where she spent her youth studying music while she was also taking her MA in Philosophy at the prestigious Sorbonne. Leïla's crooning debut on stage began age 13 with the choir "Les P'tits Loups du Jazz". She also obtained a degree in jazz and classical music from IACP and gives singing lessons in schools.

The Brahma Sextet, her first formation was nominated best band at the Montmartre Jazz Festival in 2002 and received 3 "Sunside Awards" in 2003. That was for starters. In 2004 the band recorded FRIDA, acknowledging Leila's name high on the jazz scene. Naturally, she won a prize for the FRIDA composition and received a grant from the Sacem, a French professional association promoting songwriters, composers, and music publishers.

Since then Leila's fame has been on the rise. In 2006 she won a Government prize 'Youth Challenge' handed out by the French Ministry of Youth and Sports. Her second opus "strange flower" (Nocturne 2007) was selected by the program 'Jazz Primeur de Cultures France' for its capacity to blend poetry and tunes to portray Aicha Kandicha, the poetic sorceress of the desert lands.
Behind the piano Leïla's hands blend the metaphysical of her spirit and heart with the technical of a long line of professional work "coloured melodies, a delicate and sensitive piano" report Pierre de Choqueuse in Le Blog de Choc when Jean-Marc Gelin in Jazzman-Jazzmag sums it up as "an undisputable charm".

Leila can be heard at the Orléans Jazz Festival, or the 'Jazz in Marciac' festival. Calvi Jazz Festival in Corsica, Music'arts Ile de France, Défense Jazz festival and Jazz in Montmartre can not imagine an event without her. That does not stop Leïla Olivesi from reaching further out to festivals abroad in Istanbul, Ankara, Athens and New York.

Leïla finds as much inspiration in Paris as she does around the world. Her original work attracts the most extraordinary musicians who find in her scores (with hearty tones and melodic phrases) the power to overwhelm the future of jazz lovers.
