K-Sera on The Edge 96.1

K-sera is responsible for the first Urban countdown on a commercial radio station in a prime time slot and is responsible for the format change which gave Australia its first, and only, commercial radio station with a pure Urban format.

Each weeknight from 7pm K-sera and The Dirty Dozen counts down the hottest 12 Hip Hop R&B tracks mixed up with some old school classics and some dance floor killa filla’s and introduces you to the latest tracks dropping here and overseas. This is topped off with her Mixmasters on the 1’s and 2’s they include DJ Mac Old School, DJ Nick Toth Dancehall/Reggae, Fly Girl Tee, DJ Tikelz, Peter Gunz, NZ’s CXL and Sirvere. If it is happening in Hip Hop or R&B you’ll hear it first on K-Sera and The Dirty Dozen and if there is an artist in town you can bet on them being in her studio.

The Dirty Dozen was launched in August 2005 and following its phenomenal success the station relaunched on January 1, 2006 with a full format change based on the Dirty Dozen formula and is now making dramatic inroads within the established Sydney radio market as The New Edge96.1 Hip Hop and R&B.

In addition to the Dirty Dozen K-Sera does a series of specialty shows following the Dirty Dozen including Make it Clap Dancehall and Reggae every Tuesday and The Tasman Connector exploring the local Australian and New Zealand scene on Wednesdays and Sunday nights.

K-Sera has had a long history in Hip Hop stemming way back to the early 90’s as a member of Sydney Hip Hop band Bad Reputation. She was one of the first female MC’s in an era where radio stations where positioning themselves with slogans like “No Rap Crap”. Faced with this sort of adversity and of traditional old school values, of Hip Hop being a way of life, K-Sera knew the best way she could make a difference was to infiltrate radio. Often ostracised within the Hip Hop community for not only being female but also white, within the realms of radio executives she knew she could turn this into a positive.

So she packed up her job in sports marketing and chose to drive promotional vehicles for $10/hr ambitiously thinking it wouldn’t take long until she could convince the powers that be that the time was right for a Hip Hop station. Little did she know it would take 12years, thousands of cans of soft drink and 3 radio stations for her to see her dream through to fruition!

While she has always been passionate about her own music career the cause has always been greater than her individual ambitions often she acknowledges to her own detriment. However, her career highlights include playing support for Ice Cube performing with Naughty By Nature and Digital Underground, a featured artist at the 1st Rhumba and recording and performing in Vienna and Italy. She has been a guest host on Channel V several times and is currently working with an all female line up known as Emerald City.

She has interviewed some of the biggest names in Hip Hop including 50 Cent Ja Rule Nelly and the Black Eyed Peas, The Gza and DJ Muggs has had an entire morning dedicated to her show on Sydney Talk Back radio station 2GB. She has had articles published on her in The Sydney Morning Herald, Urban Hitz Magazine and Talk. To explain reverting back to her MC title and history K-Sera recorded a track titled The Dirty Dozen that was added to rotation and loved by her growing fan base explaining her self the way she knows best i.e. lyrically!

K-Sera has worked tirelessly behind the scenes promoting urban music where ever possible for many years and therefore her knowledge of not only Hip Hop but in particular Sydney’s Hip Hop history is extensive. The aim is to naturally promote our own urban industry and encourage competitors to also increase their urban additions, but to most importantly promote positive change through music by opening a forum for the youth of today already attracted to the global phenomenon and maintain the culture of Hip Hop.

In August 2006 K-Sera and The Dirty Dozen was voted by the public as the most popular Urban Radio Show at the Australia and New Zealand Urban Music Awards and was nominated as Best Music Presenter at the 2006 Australian Commercial Radio Awards.
