BIOGThe word feisty was probably invented for London based band, Koogaphone who are currently recording their second album.

Lead singer, Julie Gravell, takes no prisoners with her succinct style of raucous abandon tinged with rock chick savvy. Together with the frenetic sound of band members, bassist Rachael Carter and drummer Tom Murrow, the trio has built a worldwide following which other bands would sell their sisters for. 2010 has been spent promoting their debut album Rocket Science, recorded by legendary producer Gareth Parton. They have had a busy year of gigging; Italy, Holland, Germany, the UK, followed by summer festivals including Reading and Glastobury. Now it's back to the studio for the next round.
In 2008 they were awarded a PRS grant to perform at Canada's NXNE North by North in June followed by a gig at Glastonbury.
Their sound is more Buzzcocks meets Janice Joplin than anything else, explains Julie.
"I was influenced by a lot of 70s and 80s stuff - The Buzzcocks and The Who as well as The Pixies and a dash of Aerosmith is all in there," says the lady who named her band after a Polish telephone sex line.
"It was great Glastonbury again. Last time we played a 40 minute set on board a massive purple metallic pirate ship in the festival's Midnight Carnival field. About three thousand people were chilling out below us. It was brilliant, an experience that every band wants."
Koogaphone UK debut, 'Rocket Science' was produced by Gareth Parton who is the genius behind the Foals, Pipettes and The Go! Team. The lead single 'Just Like me' and 'Killer Looks' received airplay on MTV Europe and were given rotation by UK MTV 2.
The band's collection of early demo's, 'Fast, Loose and Lovely', was produced by Pat Collier of Wonderstuff, Primal Scream fame. It was released in Canada and North America following their appearance at NXNE two years ago.
Since then, Koogaphone have been busy gigging in Britain, Spain, Canada, Italy and Holland– as well as juggling more unusual requests including being the 'wedding band' at the Isle of Wight's Bestival when Jake Shears of The Scissor Sisters got married to himself in front of a mirror before hundreds of fans in an enclosed inflatable church.
"It was lots of fun, but then I've always been into the bizarre," adds Julie.

SINGLE REVIEWS- We love a bit of frenetic riffing, banshee like grooviness and haunted lair theatrics, this is the sort of genius music that brings it's own sonic smoke machine, mythical quality through and through! And genius label name, snatch!- SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM
'Killer Looks' has all the lo-fi scuzz and fizzle of a post-modern punk track, but with some killer pop-hooks to keep it all interesting.-THE MAG

The Old Canal
Such zip and vitality and attitude. Worth listeng to for the very alternative female vocal and the rapidly recited lyrics. Very unusual and 'together' band JAWZ KIAC HITLINE REVIEW I must confess that before even listening to this CD 'Big Cliff' had made its way from our music page and onto my playlist about 2 months previous and it hasn't budged since.
The reason? Well its hard to put a finger on just one thing as the track is greater then the sum of its parts. The snappy drumming attached to a rumbling, bouncing bass make up the watertight foundations, bolting things together during the various ear catching tempo changes. On top of this sits the guitars, which gently stab away at the melody, leaving Gravell's voice to grab you by the nether regions and pull you close, cursing and sneering in your face. THE MAG

Bovine Sex Club
Saturday, June 14th, 10:00 pm
It's fabulous to see a female-fronted band that isn't afraid to pull out the big guns and wail away with guitars blazing and raucous, debaucherous lyrics sure to traumatize your mother if she heard them. This three-piece UK band took the stage at the Bovine on Saturday night, pouring out delicious trashiness to a hungry crowd. They're all brilliant musicians, the girls are super hot, and to top it all off, the lovely male drummer was shirtless. A gorgeous set all in all.
Lana Winter Spill Magazine

Newcastle newbies Koogaphone buzzed the Bovine Sex Club with a set of furious punkmetal riffs, with a side of down'n'dirty. Frontgal Julie bears a resemblance to androgynous era Jimmy Page and does a great job channeling Jimmy even as she bashes out a style all her own. The occult loving Page would have liked the channellng thing.
Frontgal/bassist Rachael hefted a bigass Rickenbacker which she pummelled into submission all the while looking like a blonde Hitchcock heroine without working up a sweat, despite the sneaking suspicion she was wearing PVC under her demure mimi-dress.
Three tunes in, the drummer ripped off his shirt and joined in the fray for a solid set of gritrock, highlighted by "Day and Night" and "WhiteTrash". About what you'd expect from a band named after a Polish phone sex site. Lenny Stoute Digitaljournal.com
We headed to The Bovine to catch English rock trio KOOGAPHONE. They impressed on their NXNE appearance there three years ago, and did so even more this time. The gutsy voice and raunchy guitar of JULIE GRAVELLE spearheads their muscular yet melodic sound, with recent single "White Trash" being a highlight. They're currently in the studio with a hot British producer, and are clearly contenders- Kerry Doole Tandem Magazine Toronto Canada
Koogaphone's Easy Lay does what dirty sexy rock- and- roll is supposed to do. It makes you want to get pissed laid and dance- Antonio Papaleo, Fierce Panda

Singer Julie's vocal's are so powerful they could easily blow you away. They're loud, they're raunchy and you just have to assume the lass must be wearing a PVC corset for most of the day.Koogaphone are on a mission, that's for sure. Like many others, they're out to cause havoc, but I suspect that, unlike the rest, Koogaphone have a fair chance of making a violent impact on the music scene in no time. Drowned In Sound

Urban Lawns Review May 2007-

It's a girlie takeover! Rachael Carter provides lashing of bass driven fuel for the raven haired Julie Gravell to light with her guitar and then sing the blaze's praise! The blokes in the band, the drummer and guitarist keep the conflagration growing and I'm actually surprised this lot aren't signed to a major label! This is hot bitch dirty girl rock with songs like 'Easy Lay' and 'Killer Looks'. Not for a long time, has there been a girl punk/rock band who do it like Siouxsie. New song 'Big Cliff' is due out mid-July well worth a listen. This band alone made coming to the festival worth while. -Scott Williams e festivals

Highlights of The Urbanlawns Festival

Koogaphone – spunky, dirty, gorgeous Koogaphone – they gots the moves, the riffs and the energy to get a damp field dancing like it was the main stage at Glastonbury and we're all out of it and don't care anymore Bridport Radio

'We were excited about catching Koogaphone and they didn't disappoint. Their quirky sound quickly won over the crowd - the lead singer sounds like she's auditioning for Madame Butterfly while the bass player serves up great slabs of monolithic bass, with a cheeky grin on her face all the while. Oh, and the tunes are bloody fantastic.' Aeon Festival -Peoples Rebubic of South Devon
