From the underground of Music City, which could just as easily be bar city, restaurant city, cool hat cityetc, comes the sound of lips on cold metal. Kissing Robots could have been yet another victim of the overly crowded indie rock scene, but they decided not to be. Instead of falling in line with the status quo and continually playing gigs in back rooms, the trio took a year off to sit in the dark and write songs. Looming in the shadow of an industry that now offers no hope, nor help, they invested their money and put together a studio. Countless hours in 2010 were spent writing, self producing, engineering, mixing, and mastering the Robot's first full length album Guilty Of Love. Completely self made, Guilty Of Love offers eleven tracks of Rock-n-Roll freedom that span three decades of music and inspiration from both sides of the pond.
The Robots are headed up by Johnny K on lead vocals and guitar. With a voice inspired by and reminiscent of the early drive in Smashing Pumpkins, but with the spirit and soul of Stereophonics, his voice cuts and grinds, low when it needs to, but also soars, and lifts to great heights. As the hard drive for the Robots, his views of the world and the relationships that make it spin, often out of control, scream through on every song. On lead guitar, bass, and keyboards comes Bradley Ford, formerly of the band Bleach. Bradley and Johnny make a strong songwriting team on several tracks and lead one to believe that many lyrical conversations were had at the expense of a few bottles of wine. Bradley has a style of playing that varies greatly from Johnny, and the two create a wall of sound that is in one regard heavy, but in another completely liquid. Rounding out the Robots on drums is Mikey Kowalsky. He's a left handed gent who plays the kit right handed, and as a result creates a unique sonic force that propels the songs forward. Almost like a orchestra played completely on drums, his foot is fast, while his hands and arms seem to float at times. As a superb time keeper, he brings a heavy element to each song without letting any one part sound repetitive, keeping a very musical essence to the rhythm.
For now, shedding the expectation to tour, Kissing Robots are focused on one thing: creating great songs. With over forty to fifty songs from the writing sessions not recorded yet, they plan to continue to create and experiment in the studio while releasing their albums exclusively online. Guilty Of Love is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. It's a promising record that makes one excited for what is going to come next.
