Biography

Formed in 2003 under the name Prodigal Son, Kicking Valentino are a York based alternative melodic rock band who have been on the scene for over two years and gig regularly around North Yorkshire. They are influenced by bands as varied as Smashing Pumpkins, Snow Patrol, Oasis, and Foo Fighters. These influences come together to create an easily accessible but unique sound.

Prodigal Son was born in 2003 with existing band members Matt Lennon (Vocals/Guitar), Paul Fernandez (Drums) and Ben Sawyer (Bass). They then recruited a second guitarist to enhance their sound, going by the name of Andy Clapham. This was in 2004, when Andy came across the name Kicking Valentino on a daydreaming stroll in book shop Borders. He caught a glimpse of a book on his wander and misread it for Kicking Valentino. Who knows what the book was actually called, but that’s where the name came from. He thought it sounded like an original and catchy band name, and there it was, Kicking Valentino.

In late 2004, Ben decided it wasn’t for him and left the band, soon to be replaced by another very talented bassist, Nick Fisher. The band then played mix and match with their drummer, swapping Paul for Simon Haley, and then Simon for George White, in September 2005.

After settling with George as their drummer, the band decided it was time to record their first EP, entitled Air I Breathe. They recruited engineer and producer Henry Bourne for the project, and the EP was completed at the start of September 2006. With the help of Henry, the band created an EP that they felt did their songs justice, with a balanced and powerful sound. Within days of the newly recorded songs being uploaded to MySpace, the band’s friends list went from just over 200 to over 400 in the space of 2 weeks, with the majority having added the band. The profilke now has over 1500 friends, with friends from all over the world.

During late 2007, Andy left the band to persue more of his University based work. The band quickly found a replacement in the form of Sam Harding. After only four practices, Sam delivered a blinding set at the band's first Fibbers headline show, proving himself to be a great asset to the band. Now with a more powerful, dynamic, versatile, and bigger sound, the band are looking forward to a number of high profile gigs in 2008, and establishing themselves as one of the main players in the Northern music scene, and beyond!
