Kharma, Houston’s newest, hottest phenom is the next
best thing out of the great state of Texas! This rapper,
singer, songwriter and author is straight from the streets
of Houston’s infamous Acres Homes neighborhood, home
to entertainment industry big names like Chamillionaire,
Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Slim Thug, and actress Loretta
Devine. Brought up by her mother and grandmother, and
being the middle child of three girls, Kharma found her
outlet “runnin’ the streets” with the boys in the
neighborhood. She received a full basketball scholarship
in high school, and it was then that she developed her
love for music. She was a force to be reckoned with when
it came down to those street corner freestyle battles after
school, and she spent time in the studio watching other
rappers spit rhymes. Her upbringing in her infamous
“hood” helped develop her aggressive style and flow.
“I’m competitive, and watching those cats in the studio made me think, if they can, I can
too! I realized I was cold at it.”
With her “out to get it” attitude, Kharma’s been tearing up tracks ever since. With years
of creative energy released through her pen and pad, she’s out to show and prove why she
deserves recognition in this rap game.
She attributes her style and versatility to her musical influences such as
Queen Latifah,Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Lauryn Hill,T.I., Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Blige, and Outkast.
“Watching these and other artists gave me the courage to be me and do
me… to have my own swagger. I thrived off their energy and lyrics
because they had the ability to make people move. I wanted to be that
one to make people walk like I walk and talk like I talk. I knew that if I
believed in myself, and did the music that I love to do, the rest would
fall into place.”
Kharma got her initial break when she sang a hook for a local rap group
duo in Houston, Causin Havoc. Kharma then met Shawn Williams of
Yellow Tape Entertainment and under Yellow Tape’s management, she became part of
the group, then dropped her first solo mix tape called “A Change of Pace.” During that
time, Kharma has opened for artists such as E.S.G., Devin the Dude, Chyna White, Kiotti, Ciara, Twista, Hurricane, Fat Pimp, Trina, Party Boyz, Esg, and many others.
Kharma was also featured on a mixtape with Khao’s (Grand Hustle) single “Keys In The
Air.” Kharma also featured her single “G-Girl” on 97.9 The Box’s Brandy Garcia’s “I’m
Dat Bitch” mix tape. Kharma dropped her second mix tape
“Make No Mistakes” with Street Goddess Records’
support. That’s when she met her producer, Beat King of
Texas Hammers and also became affiliated with Gutta
Mamis Entertainment, dropping her single “Big Body.”
Kharma then met Greg of Chop TV and hosted a local TV
show called Slab City in Houston. Later, Kharma became
the 4th addition to the Gutta Mamis group, which included
Surreall (Swisha House Entertainment), Candi Redd,
Sugar, and herself. The Gutta Mamis performed in and
around the Houston area and also got radio play on 97.9
The Box, for their first collaboration single “Baddest
Thang Around.” With the success of the single, Gutta
Mamis began working on a collaboration album entitled
“M.O.N.” She released her first solo album “Boujetto” in the Summer 2009 as well a mixtape "IamKharma" in December of 2009. Kharma is currently pushing her new single "BILLION DOLLAR COOKIE".
