Bluebird Cafe August 2008

Karin at the Bluebird in Nashville, TN April 2007

Born in Japan - Raised in NY - Living in Nashville. Leaving New York was hard but it wasn't a huge culture shock since I moved to downtown Nashville in the Music Row neighborhood. When people ask me how I like Nashville I tell them I feel as if I have finally come home. I began singing in New York at Festivals, Restaurants, Jones Beach and even prisons (as a visitor). Anyway not long after I started singing I began writing. In 1999 I was approached by an independent producer to record my first full length project. We recorded 7 of my original songs before the label went bust. That first CD was sent to Nashville and from there we released one single to national radio. It broke top 40 with Power Source Contemporary Christian Chart! Not long after that I was invited to Nashville for a showcase. As soon as I set my feet in this amazing city I knew I was finally home! Three months later I was living here!

Upon moving to town I had to settle in - buy a house, adopt some kids, start a business, finish a degree. . .and of course pursue my music dream. I met lots of great writers and started down the road of co-writing. I must say it is something I really enjoy. I have helped create some incredible music and have made some real close friends in the process. I love the closeness of friends and family and I have been especially impressed with the songwriting community here in Nashville! Kudos to all of my colleagues! You make a girl feel very welcome.

I am blessed to be able to perform all over the world and around town in Nashville. I suppose you could say my style is rock/country with a little gospel and blues. You can catch me playing every third Friday at the Monkey aka Monkey in a Round - a writer's night I co-host with award winning songwriter and long time friend Bill DiLuigi. The Monkey happens at by Dunn Bros. on 4th Ave and Church Street in downtown Nashville from 7-9PM. Come join us and hear some of our amazingly talented musical friends. You can go to www.monkeyinaround.org for more info and directions.

I keep my vocal chops up by performing with the Music City Community Chorus - a classical ensemble under the direction of Renee Grant Williams(www.myvoicecoach.com). We perform several times a year and I will post those dates here as they arise.

Renee and I are also gearing up for "Just Add Water" - a performing songwriter workshop which will hit five cities in Australia in Jan and Feb of 2009. We will be joined by world renown guitarist and Box Top member, Gary Talley and award winning songwriter Bill DiLuigi. The four of us will teach a two day workshop aimed at helping the performing songwriter excel in all areas. For more info you can go to www.justaddwaterworkshop.com.

I also teach songwriting every summer at Barefoot Republic Camp - a summer camp for inner city youth in Nashville - go to www.barefootrepubliccamp.com for more info about that. And I also do private one on one songwriting coaching.

As you may have gathered, I LOVE to travel and I do a lot of it for music or coordinating the building of orphanages for a non profit organization called Building the Kingdom (www.btkm.org). I've been to Europe, Australia, Africa and Japan and I am planning a music tour in China in 2010 with my good friend singer/songwriter Chris Blair.

I am a gregarian (is that a word? if not I just coined it). I love people! Music is one amazing way to connect with lots of people from all walks of life. It is a precious gift and I am thankful everyday that I have the privilege to do what I love!

Music has allowed me to travel the world - check out the map for all the places I have visited and let me know if you'd like me to come to your area!
