Singer songwriter K Anderson describes his sound as ‘lesbian music by a boy’. He has Lily Allen’s frankness, Ryan Adams’ heartbreak, and Tegan and Sara’s rough charm. Yet for all these comparisons there something distinctive about K’s sound making it hard to pigeon hole. Taking influences from the likes of the Brill Building sounds of the 60’s and the radio pop of his youth K melds a ramshackle hotchpotch of styles with a diversity of instrumentation and a sonic boldness that is both emotive and disarmingly honest. Capturing stories about his life; lost loves, rampant nights, and that horrible feeling of social awkwardness, essentially personal, but ultimately everyman.

In real life K is unassuming, mellow, yet personable and the same could be said of the record he has just crafted. His debut album ‘The Overthinker’ is a richly orchestrated affair featuring everything from double basses to a host of antique, second hand and even toy music making paraphernalia acquired on various trawls through second hand shops and the internet. It is no surprise that this rich depth of sound is borne out of K’s numerous collaborations and experiments as part of an ongoing collective of musicians, poets and artists many of whom have contributed to ‘The Overthinker’ in their own unique way. Artistically packaged and imbued with the DIY ethos that permeates all that K does this a debut album full of charming underdog spirit mixed with a bombastic, varied and ultimately trendless sound.

Written over the five years K spent in London having moved from Australia aged just 22 ‘The Overthinker’ was recorded by dance producer RNSTR, a process which K confesses caused “lots of arguments, with plenty of sulking and name calling”. This process distilled 11 tracks of freewheeling, intelligent pop for those who like their music with a rough edge but a core of catchy songsmithery, an ambitious debut with a boundless energy.

K’s music is far from cool; in fact it is the wilful antithesis of that, self-conscious and with a knowing glint in its eye. An artist who thrives in pop-cultures gaps (and sometimes in pop-culture itself), with no easy pigeonhole aside from a desire to produce music that engages and, crucially, tells a story. A rabbit hole of curiosity with delves deeper and deeper the more attention you pay it, K.Andersons music is something to be savoured but most importantly enjoyed in the warm spirit in which it is intended.
