KANALO was founded on a whim. FM 100 was seeking contestants for their second annual Pride of the Islands talent contest. Two friends got together, wrote a song and formed a band for the contest, finishing less than a day before the song needed to be submitted but the band didnt have a name yet. The group chose, KANALO, representing Kaneohe and Waimanalo where the members resided.

The group went on to win the group category of that contest in November 1998. They recorded their winning song, I Wonder and Whats Up, a 4 Non-Blondes cover, with Pacific Blu on the Pride of the Islands II compilation album. They did so well that they were invited to record another song, Easy Street, as guest artists on the Pride of the Islands III album.

In August 2000, KANALO released their first album, entitled KANALO, with 12 tracks of original songs, all written and performed by the group and produced by Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winning producer, Tracey Terada of Four Strings Productions.

KANALO has performed at events including: Maxi Priest and Shaggy at Andrews Amphitheater, Island Rhythms Bombucha, and FM 100s Jammin Hawaiians, and various island fairs (Farm Fair, Hoolaulea, Waikii Festival, etc.). They have played gigs at: Kaponos (formerly the Pier Bar), Don Hos Island Bar and Grill, Pipeline Caf, Sanseis, Oceans, Eastside Grill, Hawaiian Adventure Water Park, as well as the Neighbor Islands and Mainland states. The group performs for private parties as well as for charitable causes.
