"Johanna delivers her heartfelt songs with passion and profound musicianship. She has a stunning stylistic range, and a voice that never quits."
—Mina Carson, co-author, Girls Rock: 50 Years of Women in Rock and Roll
"Johanna uses her rich, vibrant voice like wings, telling us the stories of the depth of her soul. She is one of our new singer/songwriters to watch. She is a gem."
—Rhiannon, vocal artist and Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music
Johanna's genre-busting music combines the soulful passion of Aretha Franklin, the melodious expressiveness of Carol King, the indie edge of Tegan and Sarah, the improvisational elegance of Ella Fitzgerald, and the Gleeful exuberance of, well, Glee.
Johanna is a rarity among singer/songwriters: she is a gifted performer and an extraordinary songwriter. Her original songs combine unforgettable melodic hooks with powerful lyrics that tap deep into the collective soul. In performance, she mixes originals and improvisations with unique interpretations of favorite soul, pop, rock, and folk songs. Whether playing solo, with friend and collaborator Lyris, or with a full band, Johanna exudes passion and power that attract fans of all ages.
Johanna wrote her first song when she was nine years old. By the time she was 20 she had released her first CD; studied with singer/songwriters Chris Williamson and Tret Fure, jazz singer Rhiannon, and rhythm-master Keith Terry; performed in musical theatre, rock and world-beat bands, gospel and women's community choirs, improvisational acting and singing troupes, short and feature-length films, and countless festivals, rallies, clubs, coffee houses, colleges, and universities.
Johanna's first solo CD, Stolen Grace, showcases her songs in acoustic folk and world-beat styles. Her second CD, If I Could Fly, expands the stylistic palate to include rock, soul, gospel, and a cappella. She is currently working on her third album in Portland, Oregon.
