Jess Morgan – artist biog
Singer-songwriter Jess Morgan makes roots music that is a half-way-house between British Folk music and Americana. Jess is a narrative songwriter and aims to pack as much power and intrigue into simple melodic stances as possible. The album ‘All Swell’ was released April 2010 on Jess's own label, Amateur Boxer Records. The record was made in Bergen, Norway against the backdrop of a freezing Norwegian winter.
“In flagrant defiance of such circumstances, the results of this meeting glow with customary warmth of Morgan’s delivery – clear, open guitar and ethereally bluesy vocals, mic’d close and intimate as they lull and soar.” (Oz Hardwick, R2/ Rock’nReel Magazine)
Jess has a distinct voice and style and an approach to song-writing that is extremely evocative and much of her repertoire involves plots and characters anchored in real places and times. Infamous songwriter, Nicky Chinn is a fan. Jess has also been championed by DJ Steve Lamacq and has earned her a place on tour with Ben Taylor and support slots for touring acts: Teddy Thompson, Megson, LAU and others.
"I think ‘All Swell’ is a terrific first album. Full of interesting songs with great fresh sounding vocals from Jess. An artist to look out for – I’m a fan!"
- Nicky Chinn, Songwriter
"Every so often you come across a little gem like this!"
- Steve Lamacq, DJ BBC Radio 2
This spring saw Jess take off on a three-week shoe-string tour of New England including a string of gigs in Greenwich Village ending, appropriately at The Bitter End, before flying home in time for a summer of folk-festival spots.
In 2011 Jess will tour in Northern Germany and Holland and is currently booking UK gigs

"The best acoustic album I've heard this year, by a country mile."
