Inspired by her environment, fueled by her childhood, and driven by her dreams, 19-year-old singer, songwriter, actress, and not to mention, model, Janai Malee is destined for success.

Inspired by her environment, fueled by her childhood, and driven by her dreams, 19-year-old singer, songwriter, actress, and not to mention, model, Janai Malee is destined for success.

Born and raised in the heartless streets of South Central, Los Angeles, Janai stayed focused while the majority of her peers fell victim to a life of crime, drugs, or violence. “Seeing my mom struggle working three jobs to take care of four children definitely inspired me to make something of myself, because she had no help.” With as many as eight people living in a three bedroom home, nothing could stop Janai from being inspired and focused on her goal.

At the early age of four, Janai’s father introduced her to a world of music and entertainment. As a fluent musician and vocalist, Janai’s father would take her to his bands rehearsals and concerts. This exposure planted a permanent seed in Janai’s soul. “I remember going to every rehearsal and I knew every word to every song, it was like I was in the band!” By the age of seven this beautiful experience became a permanent scar as Janai’s father walked away forever. “As much as I was hurt I know it was all part of God’s plan, it made me who I am.” For Janai, growing up was tough but nothing was bigger than her dreams. Janai saw every obstacle as a training ground as well as her 1 source for lyrical content. Consistently writing and constantly preparing has helped Janai develop a Sugar over concrete sound.

Influenced by icons like Prince, Ron Isley, Marvin Gaye, Betty Wright, Aaliyah, and Brandy, Janai was taught by the best.

Every good fairytale needs a hero, and in this story the hero is a 5’4 singer/songwriter/ actress/model with beautiful hazel eyes and a tomboy swagger that guarantees a happy ending. Music listeners have a lot to look forward to as we follow Janai on her journey towards success
