It took a whole lot of begging and whining on my part, but my parents finally coughed up the dough for a guitar + lessons at age six. Once the guitar arrived my toy trains stood in the corner collecting dust–they had no chance. I took to playing chords like a duck to water. Before I was old enough to date–make that should have been old enough to date–I jumped on stage, mostly small-town shows around my town in Northern Germany with three band mates from my school.
I left Germany to attend Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam where I put together the Dutch rock quartet, Cropduster, with some fellow masters in music students. When I needed a break from those guys, I hung out with Canadian singer and songwriter Alexander Mckenzie and the two of us formed this folk duo The Almosts.
I got into this Damien Rice mode at University, and I began writing a lot of my own stuff and doing solo shows in Holland, Germany, Brussels and England, and I put out a debut album, For the Love of Sound, as an independent artist in 2008. Later that year I hooked up with Roger Shah, a German DJ and producer, and the two of us began playing around with remixing some of the songs from my album. We recorded the single Don't Wake Me Up with my vocals and guitar riffs and it became an instant club-smash. We followed up with the single Breaking Waves and the instrumentals Acapulco Waves and Summer Escape. Our latest collaboration, Dance With Me, was released in May 2011 and is now in a remix contest.
Now I live in Brooklyn, in Clinton Hill, which is, by the way, bar none, the coolest neighborhood imaginable, but hey don't go telling everybody now–that's our secret. I don't live large, but I do live well, and I'm working super hard on music. Expect to hear something new from me in early 2012, and I hope to be coming to a stage near you then too.
