Independiente was established in 1996, their first signing being Travis. Travis' debut single "U16 Girls" was released in April '96 and their first album "Good Feeling" in 1997. This was followed in 1999 by Travis' Number 1 album "The Man Who" featuring the iconic track "Why Does It Always Rain On Me". Travis released three further albums with Independiente ("The Invisible Band"; "12 Memories"; "The Boy With No Name"). Independiente's practice of signing eclectic artists that embodied its ethos of finding and nurturing independent music talent led to releases by, amongst others, Paul Weller ("Days Of Speed"; "Illumination"), Martina Topley Bird ("Quixotic"; "The Blue God"), grime pioneers So Solid Crew ("They Don't Know"; "2nd Verse") and White Rose Movement ("Kick"). In 2004, Independiente signed Embrace and released their Number 1 comeback album "Out Of Nothing", followed in 2006 with their album "This New Day" which also entered the charts at Number 1. Independiente signed the Malian band Tinariwen in 2006 and released two albums ("Aman Iman"; "Imidiwan") both of which reached number one in the world music charts, and resulted in them being invited to play on Later with Jools Holland and the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury.
