COME IN, SIT DOWN AND RELAX

The Portugal based lineup of Diana Freire on vocals, João Júlio and Paulo Bispo on guitars, Diogo Freire on bass, Aurélien Vieira Lino on keyboards and Joaquim Pequicho on drums, together nearly 2 years, have in their own manner, begun anew with IanaSonic.

Working in with producer/composer Marco Jung, for 4 years now, Diana, João Júlio and Marco created IanaSonic themselves, as a trio of composition in studio, then meeting the rest of the band: “we’re always there [at marduc studios] creating new songs, new ideas, trying to find the better way to get our message through. No deadlines, no expectations, no one interfiring with the composition process.”, furthers Diana.

IanaSonic’s debut album is a musical and lyrical time capsule of their past times.

From the bouncy “My little bit of sunshine”, to the heaviness of “Love (can’t live without it)”, the major chorus of “Bitter Flavour”, the innocent “Through and through”.

“Most of the times, Marco starts playing (on the piano, guitar, whatever), 'till he gets to the right melody/harmony. when he gets there, normally the rest of the song pops out easily.normally!(laughs)”, explains Diana.

In addition to soul-complex songs, IanaSonic was likewise produced by Marco on a complex basis and that approach also went for the actual “sounds” of the band.

The whole record was written by Diana and Marco, composed by Marco and João and produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Marco, in Portugal.

“This record is very special to us, ‘cause it’s the first one and also, we spent 4 years working on it song by song”, explains Diana, “we came to a total of 20 songs we listened to it and listened again and filtered the ones we think that reflect us the most. Just months ago, we got the possibility to re-record some guitars with the right, fat sound and Marco got the time to sit, listen to the songs and start mixing them objectively. Before was impossible the tracks are composed and recorded right away.”

The band’s sound matches the combination of personal and global issues that went into the writing on IanaSonic.

“Our influences and who we are, is all over the songs”, explains Diana, “we always leave the door open for any musical genre and any weird musical instruments and sounds, as long as we feel comfortable with it”, they say.

Other cool IanaSonic curiosities:

Although Marco doesn’t play with the band live, he’s an essential key in the composing/writing process.

He also gives is contribution as a performer in most of the songs (with drum tracks, guitar solos, backing vocals, bass, etc).

Also, Joaquim Pequicho, João Mota and Paulo Bispo not only backup IanaSonic live, but also play on the record.

On “My little bit of sunshine” IanaSonic has João Guincho (Dapunksportif) as a special guest playing the solo.

Rudy Jacket (Restonica) played the strings on the song "Continuous Night".

Eddy Slap gave his contribuition on "Unfaithful Beliefs", playing bass.

Also, Ruben Santos played trombone on "Too Perfect".

As the band reflects on IanaSonic and the making of this album, is clear their feeling of happiness and confidence.

“We gave our best and will keep giving on the next albums. Although the record industry is passing through a quite difficult time, that shouldn’t stop us [musicians] from spreading our word”.

And though IanaSonic ends with the melancholic “Continuous Night”, the song and the CD itself ends with continuous hope as Diana intones “The night goes on.”

"IANASONIC ‘CONTROVERSY’ (INDEPENDENT)

Here we have a very original band. IANASONIC is coming out of Portugal and their CD ‘Controversy’ contains sometimes very experimental music, which still sounds very melodic. It combines a lot of different genres, namely Progressive Rock, Ambient, Popmusic and even Metal riffs are thrown together on this CD that reminds me of a mix between EVANESCENCE, THE GATHERING, TERRI NUNN/BERLIN/DALBELLO/LUBA and some Gothic Industrial band from the 1990s (DEUS for example). However, here and there the band also goes ahead in going for a more straightforward catchy uptempo Melodic Poprock approach, such as in the fantastic “Bitter flavour”, but also songs like “Unfaithful beliefs”, “Five days” and “Love (Can’t live without it)” are very catchy and contain super melodic choruses. The female singer (DIANA FREIRE) has a great voice, giving the band really an own identity and all together I think this band might attract a lot of musicians, because melodies are all over the place here, while the music itself is original enough to not sound for the masses alone. "IANASONIC - Controversy

I have had this album a while now, and have had time to listen over and over again to the songs many times.

Ianasonic has managed to create something that stand forward in the masses of artists/bands today with their own unique style.

Musically they are hard to describe with elements and influences from a lot of different musical genres, from pop/rock, gothic rock, ambient to hard rock/metal with an experimental progressive side, but at the same time they have a smooth melodic side and with Dianas vocals on top they sounds just fantastic!

The opener Come In, Sit Down And Relax, is a very nice rhythmic rock song. I like the sounds throughout and the way the song goes make me want to hear it again and again! The instrumentation is delicate with cool riffing guitars, great played drums and steady bass playing. The vocals from Diana is really nice and bring the melody parts and chorus lines to a high level!

The next My Little Bit Of Sunshine, make me into a happy mood with its rhythm and style. A pop/ rock oriented song with a hint of rock from the 70s. The melody is very rememberable and the chorus get stuck in your head after a few rounds in the player.

Unfaithful Beliefs opens with some cool drumming before the bass and guitar follows, a relaxing start with fine vocals that throughout builds up with more power. Partly a more experimental song with different styles and tempos. The instrumentation is delicate with lots of fine details and I like the guitar solo in this!

Five Days is a more straight forward rock song, but it has its own unique style that brings it to a top level! The melody is entertaining and the chorus lines is very addictive.

Love (Cant Live Without It) is one of my favorite songs, in a way a more advanced experimental song. The metal riffing guitars that comes in and goes out throughout is delicate and the different sounds and the melodic lines with the a bit progressive style is really entertaining and interesting to listen to!

Bitter Flavour is also a little jewel of a song that opens with some cool guitars and sounds before the vocals enters the song. The 80s pop/rock sounding verses lead the way to some really great rocking choruses. Musically they manage to create something with an own style and substance that sounds and stands out in the rock world today, so I take my hat off for genius creativeness when it comes to write special songs!

Pink Baloon is a perfect example of the creativeness this musicians have! A more advanced song with a bit of everything, a little dark side, progressive hints, but at the same time melodic and I admire the vocals from Diana when I hear her capacity in songs like this.

White Demon reminds me about another song called Killing in the Name, with the well known band Rage Against The Machine. It is something with the way the guitars goes that make me think about that song. Without that the style sound totally different than the mentioned band, party an experimental song, but with a strong melody, chorus parts and great instrumentation. Through And Through opens with some cool sounds and vocals. A very modern feel over this, but it also has a more rock oriented side, and exactly this is what I like about Ianasonic that they manage to bring something into their music that makes it interesting and entertaining to listen to with all its different flavors throughout!

The album rounds up with the song Continuous Night, a song with a hint of jazz, an experimental song that grows for each listening. By buying the album you will also find a little moody jazz influenced hidden track called Too Perfect, so take your time and check out Ianasonic now!!!
