House of Echo is a mainstream rock band formed in the DC metropolitan

area that draws comparisons to super-groups like Maroon 5, Dave Mathews

Band, Sting and The Police, while breaking new ground in rock with a fresh

infusion of soul. The band is the brainchild of Lennon Award winning singersongwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist David Tauler (a.k.a. EchO).

IN APRIL 2009, HOUSE OF ECHO was named the winner of Washington, DC’s DMV Idol. Sponsored by Fox Channel 5, this multi-round competition included Grammy-nominated producer Chucky Thompson on the judges’ panel. This event landed House of Echo an upcoming performance on FOX 5 Morning News.

In June 2008, House of Echo gained international credibility by winning the Grand Prize and Lennon Award for R&B in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for David Tauler’s (a.k.a. EchO’s) original, “Maybe It’s Love.” That success was no small feat for a rock band in a contest that is estimated to have over 10,000 entries.

Crossing racial lines started at an early age for Tauler who, at 16, felt convicted to walk up the street to the closest church to his house and join. A predominantly black church, Kettering Baptist, baptized Tauler into a fear of the Lord and a reverence for gospel and soul music. There Tauler dreamed of assembling a talented band that could seamlessly blend the rock and soul worlds—a dream that became House of Echo.

Tauler wasted no time. As a young saxophonist, he led his own 30-part concert series at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Tauler, at 17, secured his first regular jazz club gig, playing standards, although the club owners assumed for months that he was 21. Tauler later won a full scholarship to the University of Maryland where he studied music.

When a college friend gave Tauler his first Sting CD, Tauler immersed himself into the rock world. He found his voice as a singer-songwriter and recorded his first demo: EchO Dreamworld, which debuted as a semi-finalist in the 2004 Unisong International Songwriting Contest.

The demo attracted bassist and producer Teo Lee, whose first band as a teen was called 20th-Century Funk. Ironically before officially meeting, Tauler had already left an impression on Lee. Lee immediately recognized that Tauler was the same “crazy white kid” Lee was surprised to see a year earlier fronting a neo-soul band in an all black club.

Lee and Tauler searched to find Washington area musicians interested in breaking cultural boundaries. They found over 20 talented instrumentalists who also believed the vision—recording and performing live as “roommates” in what became House of Echo. In 2005 House of Echo entered the Emergenza International Music Festival, placing 30th out of nearly 3,000 bands.

While House of Echo may currently be DC’s best-kept secret it will not be for long. –MEPG
