I consider a song to be epic if it has one of those "The fate of the world hangs on what happens next" sounds. A song that is maybe short and have a lot of beat changes and a lot of rush.

They are commonly used in a movie or game trailer. They are in fact songs with a lot of long instrumental sections and solos. This instrumental section placed in the right moment of a movie, movie trailer or section of a game can make you feel the heroic, majestic and impressively great moment that you are experiencing.
