Biography
Hermitage were born and live in Genoa. Since 2006 they have been playing in their hometown and in other cities in Italy, resulting one of the most interesting and promising Italian post rock bands in the underground scene.
After a first auto produced ep, they released in 2007 “as in open spaces” for the Italian independent label Marsiglia Records (www.marsigliarecords.it), which was reviewed by many webzines and enjoyed from many listeners on the internet. Web radios transmitted their music and some of their compositions were chosen to be part of compilations related to instrumental music or to post rock in general like the Italian one “Post Rock Notes” or the American “The silent ballet”.
It’s hard to describe or define their music, because many influences and styles can be heard in their compositions. They are exclusively instrumental , trying to concentrate on ear catching melodies, sudden rhythm changes, epic explosions, weaving harmonies and psychedelic atmospheres but also having in mind and being inspired from the music and style of many other bands they like and listen such as mono, explosions in the sky, tortoise, Oneida, motorpsycho, shellac ecc.
Their aim is try to innovate and distinguish themselves as much as possible from ordinary post-rock, balancing at the same time the taste for simplicity and repetition with unexpected and sudden musical solutions.
In April 2008 they recorded three new tracks that, according to their plans, will be part of a split (again for marsiglia records) with the Slovenian post rock band Coma-Stereo. So at the moment they are looking for other possible co operations in order to promote their latest music at their best, looking around for other independent labels that might be interested in a co-release with the already mentioned Marsiglia Records.
Gli “Hermitage” sono nati e vivono a Genova, dove dal 2006 ad oggi sono riusciti a ritagliarsi una certa visibilità, nonché una notevole considerazione fra gli addetti ai lavori.
“Propongono musica post-rock strumentale, sfoggiano una maestria notevole nel maneggiare molti degli stilemi tipici del post-rock: intrecci circolari di chitarre (ma anche violino e sintetizzatori), progressive stratificazioni sonore, atmosfere dilatate e un'attenzione tutta particolare per le dinamiche vuoti-pieni."

Fino ad oggi vantano un’intensa attività live a Genova, grazie al prezioso aiuto di associazioni come “Disorderdrama”, “Metrodora,” L’Arci di Genova, L’ufficio “Psycho”, (organizzatore ogni anno del “Goa Boa festival”) e centri sociali come il Laboratorio Occupato Buridda, lo Zapata, il Terra di Nessuno ecc.
Attività estesa anche nel resto d’Italia, principalmente nel nord, dove la passata stagione hanno collezionato una quindicina di date, esibendosi in locali come L’Ortosonico di Pavia, il Taurus di Torino, Il Mattatoio a Modena, l’Alpheus a Roma ecc.
Hanno esordito nel febbraio 2007 per l’etichetta indipendente genovese Marsiglia Records con il loro ep “As in open spaces” le cui tracce sono ascoltabili su www.myspace.com/hermitagepostrock e scaricabili dal sito dell’etichetta. (www.marsigliarecords.it )
Sono presenti su diverse web compilation addette al genere (l’americana “The Silent Ballet” e L’italiana “Post Rock Notes” assieme ai più noti “Port Royal” e ai concittadini “Dresda”.
Il loro brano “Glass” è stato inserito nel primo volume della compilation Buridda, raccolta che contiene le migliori produzioni sonore della scena musicale Genovese e trasmessa in numerose web radio.
Nel maggio del 2008 il lavoro al Greenfog Studio di Genova ha portato alla registrazione di tre nuovi brani, contenuti nel nuovo ep di attuale e imminente uscita: “Oh no, it wasn’t the airplanes, it was beauty killed the beast”(un brano del quale è stato inserito nella compilation a supporto dell’uscita italiana del film sulla cultura libera:”Rip!A remix manifesto”). attualmente la band sta attraversando un periodo di metaforfosi interioresteriore che la sta dirigendo verso un prodotto di maggiore ampiezza ed eterogeneità ed è ansiosa di potersi mostrare in concerto in rinnovata veste.
