Biography
Change is, in so many ways, what makes Hemlok exciting.
What began as a "Ummagumma" Pink Floyd meets Rush three piece mutated over time and became a curious hybrid.
A band that not only was odd, musical and challenging but also song-oriented and melodic. Even the instrumentals had hooks and themes: For a band that took inspiration from excessive, strange bands, Hemlok seemed to be strangest of all sometimes by being catchy.
The Hemlok most people know came into play when two members found themselves holding the name with many shows left. What started as a temp band became permanent, and introduced vocal harmonies and electric violin to the already strong rhythmic concepts and dark guitar soundscapes, often involving some form of bowed playing.
Despite all the change, dark, drone-heavy songs written in those pre-Hemlok days which were played by a jamming, basement band sit comfortably next to the exotic rhythms and melody-heavy songs of the latest lineup. It could've been a mess. Instead, it expanded their audience, made people listen, and afforded even more diverse writing than ever before. Shows went from modest club dates to more ambitious, multimedia affairs, multiple nominations in the Providence Phoenix "Best" poll and the 2010 Motif Music Awards, and festivals; including the Rock the Ink Festival in Providence, RI and the New England Punk, Goth, and Metal festival at the Worcestor Palladium, MA.
And development keeps coming. New material and shows indicate the best of Hemlok is still to come, and it's probably only going to continue to surprise everyone.
