The Heartbreakers were formed in New York, from the remnants of the New York Dolls - Johnny Thunders (vocals/guitar) and Jerry Nolan (drums)- together with Richard Hell(vocals/bass) and Walter Lure (drums). Arriving just as the UK punk scene was building momentum, they developed a following playing in and around London, and shortly signed up with Track

Their debut--and only--studio album, L.A.M.F., featured all the Heartbreakers' popular live songs. At this time, many of the members of the band had left, and Johnny Thunders was deported due to his connections in New York.

The band lingered around New York clubs until 1991. Live shows often consisted of songs performed with the New York Dolls or taken from Walter Lure's solo career. His death in 1991 was not directly related to his extreme way of living, but otherwise came as little shock and the band was disbanded.
