Headphonics bio

One night in Brazil, having a good time and inspired by the tropical atmosphere, producers Tommi Sirkiä and Markku Louhio decided to form a band together. The main thing that connected these two long-time producers and musicians was the sound and groove of funk music, which they wanted to bring to their new project, Headphonics.

Tommi had been living in Brazil for some time already, so after touring and producing music there it was time for them to return to Finland and start building a studio.

The music of Headphonics takes radically different paths from Louhio's and Sirkiä's many earlier projects Kiwa, Highpersonic Whomen, Haltya, Pelinpala, Faithealers and others, with which they have performed around the globe since early 2000.

Headphonics is a blend of underground and mainstream, taking inspiration from old movie soundtracks, classic 70s funk, comics, house, breaks, drum 'n' bass and hip hop. Louhio and Sirkiä wanted to make a tribute to old traditions and to good old ways of making music without forgetting the more unconventional producing methods. The result is powerful breakbeat, spiced with pop flavour and an edge of freaky vibes rolling on funky basslines. Offering the listener guaranteed funk in diverse forms, their sound ranges from lounges and clubs to the stadiums.

Headphonics is a musical collective which features noted Finnish artists: DJ Mel-3, an established funk and hip hop DJ in Finland who does some co-producing in the band; Vesa Pasanen, a musical virtuose with the guitar; Moroccan-born MC Hosni, who has worked with such famous Finnish groups as Giant Robot, Cool Sheiks, Fat Beat Sound System and Brothom States. Headphonics also co-operates with the highly respected brass section Baabelin Torvet, which has performed with many of the biggest artists in Finland. Actress and singer Katja Sirkiä's vocal performance adds a female touch to Headphonics, and DJ Voidhead throws some drum 'n' bass mentality in the mix.
