What have Sydney band Hailer been doing since the release of their acclaimed, psych-pop-rock debut album, Good Canyon (Laughing Outlaw / Inertia) in 2010? Well.they have been busy recording a new album slated for a early 2013 release and the group is now a genuine four-piece thanks to the addition of Telecaster-slinging Pete Beringer.
Good Canyon was met with glowing reports from critics. Reviews referenced a wide variety of influencing artists including Spiritualized, Ryan Adams and Neil Young Crazy Horse. Persistent experimentation, deconstruction and exploration of new musical territory is something that comes naturally to this band much like luminaries Wilco, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Sonic Youth, and within their first album Hailer had successfully melded the traditional rock song with a kaleidoscope of influences producing something honest, loud and groovy.
With a healthy dose of touring and living post-Good Canyon, the band got together in July 2011 to jam a batch of new material at Pete's home studio – a sweet little slice of sonic respite alongside a southern Sydney bayou with a great old English mixing console and a heap of other tasty gear. They took the clocks off the walls and got it all on tape. From these sessions the band released a single, Postbag, but in less than a blink of the eye, quickly fell back into the recording of what is to be their next long-player.
Ten months and 10,000 miles later, Nick Stumpf (Caveman, French Kicks, Coke Weed) mixed and mastered the new album in Brooklyn, NYC.
Although the new material shares the eclectic spirit of the Good Canyon, the new recordings track a departure from the psychedelic mellow sound-scapes of Good Canyon to a more rhythmic guitar-driven music resulting in an intensity of sound that the groups live performances are known for.
"Spooky Clams" is the first single off the new LP, titled, Another Way - out in February 2013 through Laughing Outlaw & Inertia Records. 'Clams' is a song recorded and written for 2012 - freedom in the information age, discordant peoples, parties, protests and jumbled dream-talk.get groovy.
