In late 2003, four gentlemen met in the basement of John Mendola (of Hewhocorrupts) to form Gun Kata. Their music was, first and foremost, the product of Dean Costello. Dean's contorted guitar riffs provided the blueprint for the delirium. Dean was never afraid to tell you he enjoyed The Smiths and The Deftones, but you would never know it listening to him play, err.shred. Enter, the aforementioned, Mr. John Mendola who always insistsed that drum triggers were lame and he would never use them, but liked the way they sounded anyway. His pummeling rhythms were a thunderous counterpart to Dean's menacingly disorienting guitar. Bassist, Eugene Marino (of Friel) had the edge on most. His playing was a perfect compliment to the fracas; putting forth a low-end that Jimmy Bain would be proud of. Finally, Toney Vast-Binder (of 7000 Dying Rats) could scream, sputter and moan with the best of them. He could not, however, make any promises that he wouldn't spill his margarita on your Ozzfest t-shirt.

Gun Kata had one release (a split CD with Tower of Rome) which most of the tracks are available here for download. Dean and Toney have gone on to form Harpoon. John has resumed his full-time duties with Hewhocorrupts. At last report, Eugene was playing guitar with The Killer. Goodbye.
