Great Skaught is a band made up of confused students based out of Connecticut College in New London CT. The group's sound has been described as a blend of 3rd Wave Ska and Progressive Rock with a sprinkling of reggae, a tinkling of soul, and the full thrust of funk. Combining the unique and sultry voice of Kaity Lawler with an inventive rythym section and stunningly handsome horn players, Great Skaught has often been labeled as "pretty good."

The band was conceived out of a single hall way in a dorm known as "Katherine Blunt" in the winter of 2006. Freshman year roommates Ben Gitkind and Rich Abate discovered that they both owned guitars and sometimes played them, and in the midst of this observation, met Kim McCabe, former Saxaphonist of Plan 17 (Boston, MA), due to a single Big D and Kids Table poster that sparked the "so you listen to this crap also" conversation. The band quickly fell into place as the full line up was rounded out by essentially every friend they had. While some were nasty at their instruments, some were picking up an instrument for the first time in years, and some were picking up an instrument for the first time, the band has grown into a tight, cohesive whole.

Since then, the band has recorded two demos with the notorious Fred Duey, releasing "A Night at the Skapera" in the fall of 2007 and "Slightly Relevant" in the spring of 2008. The band is currently playing shows anywhere they can find them in the upper East Coast regioin. Someday they hope to all live together in Saxaphonist Nick Clifford's house in Maine where they would pass the days snowmobiling and transitioning Kaity over to her role as both singer and bassist of the band.

Some other words about us:

For their 11/11/08 show with Mustard Plug, Great Skaught! was described as "the new rising star of the CT Ska scene."

Some words from a recent review of our set at the I AM Festival by Stephen Chupaska for Six Square/the New London Day:

“Conn College ska heroes Great Skaught […] have taken the stage and after slow start, are really cooking. Kaity Lawler has a great voice; very much on display on a new song right now. Reminds Six Sq of Letters to Cleo and that's a good thing.”

“ Great Skaught finished its set with a thumping skank-number. The Conn College band's best was a new song called "In The Streets" that would not be out of place playing during a tearful moment on "The Hills," but in a good way.”
