Gilead7 has traveled from a rigid boom bap vocalist recording basement tapes to an eclectic, abstract hip-hop wordsmith, crafting refined gems for an audience of musical diversity. His two previous releases on ReServed (The Darkroom and Death Penalty Shots) are a testament to his envelope-pushing lyrical content and obscurely wicked instrumentals.
On his new 7-inch single, Gilead7 is the only one behind the boards, showcasing his unique style of production that his other releases only allowed him to do in part. The tracks of the single are taken from his upcoming full-length, “Two-Track Wonders,” a project that displays a wide range of Gilead7’s production ranging from trip-hop to drum and bass, with several MCs to complement them.
The title track, “Movers and Shakas,” is a dancehall-esque number conjured by the sonic witchcraft of Gilead7, providing a melodic, funky and ambient home for the vocal artistry of the internationally acclaimed Thaione Davis (URB’s top 100 of 2005), Nizm, GQ Tha Teacha, and himself. Though all of the MCs approach the commanding instrumental with their own individual subject matter, they all converge in establishing themselves as groundbreaking “Movers and Shakas” within hip hop music. The track ends with an intense and rhythmically engaging reggae chant by Chicago beatbox legend GQ Tha Teacha, pushing its already unstable gaseous elements into the plasma phase of audio excitement.
“Love Song 137” displays the distorted snares and hard-hitting kick drums of Gilead7 amidst ethereal synths and Celtic harps and flutes, creating an alternate universe for Galapagos4 affiliate and nationally respected MC battle figure Skech 185 to tell his jaded tale of love gone wrong. He assures us in the beginning that “This is my version of a love track,” as he introspectively dives into his broken heart face first, describing its wounds at impeccable speeds and line for line richness of lyrical depth.
“Moonset,” a bonus beat by Tall Black Guy, a newcomer to ReServed Records, complements G7's production with an airy, semi electronic atmosphere along with the classic hip-hop drums that his regional and national beat battle victories attest to. “Moonset” is designed to be a short “whet of the appetite,” causing the listener to anticipate TBG’s full-length, coming soon on ReServed.
