Simon Kirke & GE Smith: Iridium 3.27.2014 - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 04, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Simon Kirke is a great drummer who has played with great guitarists. His first major gig with Free featured Paul Kossoff, an influential player who died young. With Paul Rodgers on vocals, Free's "All Right Now" remains among the most played rock songs of all time. Kirke and Rogers moved on to form Bad Company, recruiting Mott the Hoople's Mick Ralphs to become one of the decade's most commercially successful bands. Kirke has played behind Bo Diddley, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, drummed alongside John Bonham at one of Led Zeppelin's final appearances and toured with Ringo Starr's All-Star Band.

G.E. Smith is the latest guitarist in Kirke's orbit. A familiar face as leader of the Saturday Night Band for a decade beginning in 1985, Smith has toured with Bob Dylan and Roger Waters and recorded with Paul Simon and David Bowie. Among several studio and live collaborations, he regularly appears with Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady as part of the electric Hot Tuna lineup.

Billed as the Simon Kirke Band, Kirke and G.E. paired with bassist Wilbur Bascomb and keyboardist Jeff Kazee at New York's Iridium, trying out new material and covering some of Kirke's classics. G.E. stepped out on vocals for "Arrowhead," a tune he's performed with Hot Tuna. The soundtrack here [all music legally purchased] is from a 2010 Tuna show in Purchase, New York.
