"Gene Kurtz has been a consummate professional musician since he was a teenager, being a touring band member, gifted songwriter/skilled arranger and a highly regarded sessions player. Working his way in popular local bands in high school and into college, he eventually became a Trait with Roy Head and the Traits.

During this time he co-wrote the hit, Treat Her Right. One of the great pieces of up tempo soul in the mid-'60s. "Treat Her Right" on Back Beat made it to number two on the R&B charts and number two pop say the All Music Guide (AMG.com). On Treat Her Right, I took it upon myself to make the lyrics rhyme and have some continuity and added more substance with an inserted horn riff - Gene Kurtz from Colin Escotts, Tattooed On Their Tongues (Prentice Hall Publishers 1996).

With the success of this single he took to writing more songs for the group that appear on the essential Treat Her Right: The Best of Roy Head collection. Of those, You're (Almost) Tuff" is one of his toughest rockers, with a sound that almost verges on Texas garage says the AMG guide again. After the Traits, Gene, became a well sought after sessions player before going back on the road and becoming a recording member with the Edgar Winter Group. During this period he recorded with them for the seminal, Entrance record. Gene then settled back down in Texas to back and lead local bands, tour with and record sessions for such diverse acts as:
