GAUGEHILL – „Nume Mir“



Showdown in Bern. Am höchsten Punkt der Stadt, auf jenem Hügel, auf dem früher die Delinquenten der Bundeshauptstadt exekutiert wurden, hat man Stellung bezogen. Drei junge Berner, mit Skills bewaffnet bis zu den Zähnen, und bereit mit allem Unfug in der Schweizer Rapszene aufzuräumen. Statt wie in Sergio Leones Filmklassiker in die Mundharmonika zu pusten, zücken die Scharfrichter Geige, Mikrofon und Plattenspieler um ihren Kontrahenten das Lied vom Tod zu spielen. Das hier ist schliesslich kein Spaghettiwestern, sondern Rap. Wir hören das Debütal-bum von Gaugehill.



Seit langem brodelt es in der Gerüchteküche der Schweizer HipHop-Szene. Wer sind Gaugehill? Sind sie die Glasur auf dem Schweizer Rapkuchen? Die Crôutons in deinem Salat? Der Bergschuh in deinem Hintern? Alles in einem, lautet die Antwort. Aber fangen wir von vorne an: Es begann auf jenem Hügel im Berner Galgenfeld-Quartier, der ihrer Crew heute den Namen verleiht. Gemeinsam drückt man dort oben die Schulbank, gemeinsam entdeckt man die Hip Hop Kultur. Janos kauft sich Plattenspieler und wird zu DJ Clumb, die anderen beiden üben sich als Nemo und Pyro im Freestylen. Eine ganze Generation junger Berner Rapper geht in ihrem Übungsraum ein und aus. Schliesslich folgen erste Konzerte, erste eigene Tracks, erste Aufnahmen für die Mixtapes befreundeter Crews. Nach einem Konzert im Januar 2004 entschliesst sich die Gruppe PVP sie zu fördern. Es folgen Konzerte im Vorprogramm der Chlyklass Acts, ein Gastauftritt auf dem PVP-Album „Eifach Nüt“ (2004), ein Track auf der „Stägehuus 3“-Compilation.



„Wir wollen das Vakuum füllen, das hinter der Chlyklass herrscht. Alles was nachher kam, konnte nicht wirklich was Bewegen. Es wird Zeit die Chlyklass von der Bühne zu fegen“, sagt Nemo heute schmunzelnd und lässt gleichzeitig durchblicken wie gross der Respekt vor dem erfolgreichen Chlyklass-Kollektiv in Wirklichkeit ist. So wurde ihr Album unter der Oberaufsicht von Link (Wurzel 5 Rückgrat und Produzent) in den Chlyklass Studios aufgenommen. Doch die künstlerische Eigenständigkeit ist ihnen wichtig: „Wir sind unabhängig und wollen es auch bleiben. Unseren Deal haben wir alleine eingefädelt“, sagt Nemo, der in seinen Texten gerne mit der Keule austeilt. Und wenn er und sein filigranerer Kollege Pyro mit Pathos und Hang zur Dramatik loslegen, dann können sich die künstlich aufgeblasenen Schweizer Pseudorapper schon mal aus ihrem Mikrofonkabel einen Strick winden („euche Summer isch z’änd – ds isch dr Früelig für mi“). Aber das Scharfrichterliche kann auch ganz schnell ins Ironische kippen. Dann nimmt man sich selbst auf die Schippe als gäb’s nichts Leichteres, spielt mit Doppeldeutigkeiten, hält Federvieh statt Schusswaffen in die Luft („Gans id Luft“) oder erzählt gemeinsam mit PVP einem gewissen Wayne all das, was sonst eigentlich niemanden interessiert („Wayne interessierts“). Zwi-schen-durch besingen sie die Hassliebe zu ihrer Stadt, fahren mit Produzent SAD im Panzer über alle Hindernisse und lassen ihrem DJ Platz, um ihre Eigenständigkeit und seine Virtuosität an der Geige zu unterstreichen. Immer wieder kommen Nemo und Pyro auf den Battlerap, das kreative Kräftemessen zurück (auch auf „Rap primitiv“ mit den Nachwuchsrappern MQ&MIK), doch schliesslich beenden sie das Album mit einem ungewöhnlichen Liebeslied. Zu einem herrlich naiven Synthie-Beat von Clumb (daneben steuern auch Merlin, Link, Simon AyEm und Flink von den TAFS Beats zu einem vielseitigen Album bei) romantisieren sie in „11 Stund“ einen One Night Stand. Die in Bern oben machen also mal wieder was sie wollen. Mit solchen Scharfrichtern lässt sich leben.

GAUGEHILL – “Nume mir (“Only Us”)



Climax in Berne. The Swiss capital’s Galgenfeld (“Gallowsfield”) neighbourhood, the cities peak point, has brought up the countries freshest young Hip-Hop crew: Gaugehill (pronounce “gau” as in gauge; “ge”-hill). On the hill the authorities used to hang delinquents in the old days, the three headsmen of Gaugehill nowadays draw nothing but mic, turntables and violin to show their opponents what top of the town is really about. We’re listening to their debut album „Nume mir“ (“Only Us”).



Rumors have swirled in swiss Hip-Hop circles for quite some time now: Who are they? The icing on Switzerland’s Hip-Hop cake? The crispy bacon to top your Ceasar? The alpine boot up your ass? They’re everything but more. Let’s start at the beginning: Once upon a time on that hill above town which they named their group after, the three met in school, hit the books together. Soon after discovering Hip-Hop culture, they formed a group in their desire to express themselves through rap. The group is composed of DJ Clumb as well as rappers Nemo and Pyro. A whole generation of rising Bernese artists went on and off their bandroom. Eventually they held first concerts, started composing their own tracks and had guest appearances on friends’ mixtapes. Following a January 2004 concert, the nationwide known group PVP, part of the Chlyklass collective, decided to promote them. Along came concerts as supporting act of the Chlyklass acts as well as a guest appearance on PVP’s 2004 “Eifach Nüt“ album and an appearance on the 2005 “Stägehuus 3“ compilation.



“We’re anxious to fill the vacuum left by Chlyklass. Any group coming later on just couldn’t move people no more. It’s about time to wash ‘em off the stage“ goes Nemo winking while it’s obvious how much respect they still have for the successful Chlyklass collective. Gaugehill’s debut album was recorded under surveillance of Link (Wurzel 5 producer and spine) at the Chlyklass studios. Nonetheless, their artistic autonomy is of major importance to them. “We’re independent and plan to keep it that way. We got the record deal on our own“, says Nemo who likes to make his point with a bludgeon. And when his more filigree cohort Pyro kicks off with pathos and a little disposedness to drama too, those artificially blown up swiss wannabe rappers may hang it up (“euche summer isch z’änd – ds isch dr früelig für mi“ meaning “your summer is over - this is my spring“). But the leaderishy can be pretty ironic, too. Making fun of themselves as if it were nothing, playful wordplay as they are throwing poultry instead of weapons up in the air. (“Gans id Luft“ – “Goose up in the air“ as “Gans” is pronounced like “guns” but means goose) and telling alongside PVP a so called Wayne everything no one really cares about (“Wayne intressierts“ – “Who’s/Wayne’s interested“, as Wayne means who besides the name in dialect too). In between they sing about the love-hate relationship with their hometown, overtake obstacles in an armor along with their producer SAD and make room for their DJ (Clumb) to manifest their singularity with his massive violin skills. Again and again Nemo and Pyro revert to so-called battlerap, the creative comparing of forces (“Rap primitiv“ alongside junior Rappers MQ&MIK), but finally end their album with an uncommon lovesong. Accompanied by a fabulously naive piano beat of Clumb (the other beats on the all-round album are by Merlin, Link, SimonAyEm and Flink of Tafs) they romanticize in “11 Stund“ (“11 hours“) a one-night stand. So those up in Berne do as they please again. One can live with such headsmen.
