FM Hi LOW is packing dance floors all over Canada. They embrace pop melody as a form of mass communication and view a bumping beat as a tool for inspiring positive change. With FM Hi LOW, Fraser MacDougall has founded what he calls "Underground Pop," a genre-bending style that brings you to the farthest ranges of reggae, dub-step, hip-hop, indie rock and folk.
The highs and lows of life, both unique and universal, have inspired MacDougall along his travels as he blends meaningful lyrics, catchy melodies, and pulsing rhythms that convey a deep consciousness for mother earth, and speak of the generosity of the human spirit. Embedded with themes of social justice, the environment and other topics he feels the need to be discussed in popular culture, MacDougall takes pop music beyond its conventional boundaries.
That level of social consciousness permeates the bands essence and everything they do. Wanting to stay true to their roots and control their creativity, FM Hi LOW turned down a contract offer from Sony Music Canada in 2010 and began digging their heels into the industry through their own raw determination.
By denying mainstream labels and multinational corporations, FM Hi LOW is able to stay in tune with the moment and practice what their lyrics preach. The band itself is a microcosm of community; the population fluctuates, but is held together by a love for the sound and an unconditional appreciation for each band members' individuality.
MacDougall is the brains behind the operation. He's a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumental musician from Montreal, Quebec who also performs acoustically and as a solo musician. His dedication to his craft has propelled FM Hi LOW into the spotlight, gaining them national recognition for their transportational grooves and unique mash-up of roots and electronic music.
Since FM Hi LOW's conception in 2007, they've been noticed by Coachella Music Festival, winning the open mic contest in 2010. That green light secured their spot as a performer at the Odwalla Stage at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival later that year where they played alongside Bassnectar, LCD Soundsystem, Jay-Z, and Stevie Wonder.
They've been an annual fixture at Folly Fest in New Brunswick and Evolve Festival in Nova Scotia, and they've headlined two East Coast tours. This winter, MacDougall and long-time FM Hi LOW member Eric Schramek are taking FM Hi LOW to Jamaica where they'll be finishing the next album. Set for release on the longest and brightest day of 2012—the summer solstice—MacDougall is ready for the next stage in FM Hi LOW's evolution.
