You enter the room and a wall of sound and heat hits you. Limbs are flying as the band sizzle underneath a cooking solo. That unmistakable sound washes over you and you forget the rest of the week even happened. The band is FRANKIE WANTS OUT, that unmistakable sound is SWING, and it’s been making audiences jump from Fitzroy to Brisbane and shows no signs of letting up.

Frankie Wants Out is a nine piece band playing original red hot Swing Tunes guaranteed to make you jump and jive all the way across the dance floor, regardless of whether you’re in a rocking pub or a classy cocktail lounge. Forming in September 2005, their sound has developed into something unique. Whilst being heavily influenced by the music of the New York dance halls of the 20’s and 30’s, they also take influence from more modern acts such as Royal Crown Revue, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.

FWO is also influenced by living in Australia, and more so Melbourne. This is no more evident than on their first EP release “The Melbourne Way” which was launched at The Evelyn Hotel, December 2006 (the largest crowd The Evelyn had seen in 2006), three tracks from this EP received extensive air play on Triple J. When asked about the significance of Melbourne to FWO, Sam Parry (Trumpet) said “Melbourne has such a great live music culture, whatever your taste in music is. It’s just great to immerse yourself and get involved in the scene. The support from other musicians is fantastic and we like to be there for people as well”.

Since the band’s initiation, they have played many shows, toured the east coast of Australia twice (sell out shows o both), had airplay on major Australian radio stations, played many festivals, had several residencies, appeared live on national television twice (Mornings with Kerri-Anne and The Today Show—Nine Network), released and sold thousands of copies of their debut EP The Melbourne Way and has just recently released their first full length album—Prohibition, launched at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on 3rd January 2009, and lead the band once again up the east coast for an album release tour.

PROHIBITION is the debut full length album from Melbourne band FRANKIE WANTS OUT. Prohibition, the follow up recording to FWO’s high selling EP The Melbourne Way, is a well mixed cocktail of styles including Latin, Rockabilly, Motown Funk, Dixieland and of course, Swing, the style they are famous for. FWO, who have made a name for themselves as a “Gangster Swing” act have been working tirelessly for the last six months on producing this much anticipated album. The album was recorded all over Melbourne, from The Shed Studio to Tender Tap Studios to the Victorian College of the Arts. Fans of Frankie Wants Out, who have been eagerly awaiting the release of this album, will be impressed with sing-able melodies, catchy horn riffs, cooking solos, jumping beats and a mixture of brand new material and live favorites, all performed by some of Melbourne’s most talented up and coming musicians.

Hailing from all over their beloved Melbourne the boy’s from Frankie Wants Out originally got together to jam and to play through some songs written by singer, Andy Coates. The result was an infectious style of hot, sweaty jazz, suited to those who want to get down. By the end of their very first show they had played to a packed dance floor, a jazz club at full capacity and had been offered two residencies.

Frankie Wants Out can act as a dance band or a lounge act and also can include other “showy” aspects in their performance. Not only are they are all decked out in suits and “Gangster attire”, they will include aspects such as magic and maybe some juggling/plate spinning and comedy – not really a Swing thing – but damned if they won’t put on an entertaining show at their gigs. They can perform up to three 50 minute sets.

Frankie Wants Out can be popular at Jazz/Swing Clubs; however they have developed more of a following at alternative night spots, pubs and bars. From lovers of jazz and latin to lovers of punk and ska, all punters seem to love the music that FWO produces. Some think that the only place for Swing is on lazy Sunday afternoon, Frankie Wants Out however is such a party band, it doesn’t matter which night of the week they perform. As long as
