Über Flaming Bess
1969 – Morgendämmerung
Es war das Jahr 1969, dass sich in Düsseldorf zum ersten Mal der Kult um die Göttin Flaming Bess manifestierte. Damit dürfte Flaming Bess eine der ältesten, aktiven Düsseldorfer Bands sein.
In der Gründungsbesetzung mit Hans Wende (git), Horst Wagner (b), Rolf Seelbach (dr) und Peter Figge (keyb) brachen vier tapfere Mannen auf, um die Saga zu verbreiten. Doch es sollte noch fast 10 Jahre dauern, bis die Band den erfolgreichen Schritt schaffte.
1977 – Aufbruch
Im Jahre 1977 entstanden um die damalige Besetzung Hans Wende, Joachim Janssen, Dieter Joswig, Peter Wahle jene legendären Demo-Tapes, die bereits alle Merkmale der späteren Flaming Bess Musik aufwiesen: durcharrangierte, instrumentale Rockmusik, vereint mit Geräuschen, Collagen und einer Fantasy-Story.
Der Rest der Geschichte ist schnell erzählt: Das an den WDR gesandte Demo beeindruckte Wolfgang Neumann so sehr, dass er die Gruppe im Rahmen seiner Sendereihe "Rockstudio" präsentierte. Dies führte zur größten Hörerreaktion des Jahres und die Band veröffentlichte Ende 1979 die erste LP Tanz der Götter im Eigenverlag.
Bei den Plattenfirmen wurde das musikalische Potential der Band zunächst nicht erkannt. Doch dann folgten 16 Wochen erste Plätze in der Schlagerally, der damals bedeutesten deutschen Hörer-Hitparade, mit der Single-Auskopplung Tanz der Götter, überwältigende Pressereaktionen sowie mehr als 36.000 verkauften LPs nach nur 6 Monaten.
1981 – Zeit der Blüte
Nach der Trennung von Peter Wahle verstärkte sich die Band mit Achim Wierschem, Barry Peeler und Hans Schweiß und nahm 1981 die zweite LP Verlorene Welt auf. Zugleich wurde eines der ersten deutschen Musikvideos produziert. Auch dieser Tonträger hatte mit mehr als 30.000 verkauften Exemplaren großen Erfolg. Dennoch hatte die Zusammenarbeit mit der Plattenfirma keinen Bestand. Doch Flaming Bess gibt nicht auf. Es formiert sich eine neue Kernmannschaft, die noch heute Bestand hat: Hans Wende (b, git, keyb), Achim Wierschem (git, keyb), Peter Figge (key) und Dieter Joswig (keyb, perc).
1983 veröffentlichen sie die LP Verschlüsselt unter dem Pseudonym Key, eine Bedingung der damaligen Plattenfirma. Seit 1984 produziert die Band nun wieder unter ihrem angestammten Namen Flaming Bess, u.a. mit Ute Freudenberg als Sängerin .
1990 – Rückbesinnung
Die 90er Jahre sind für Flaming Bess eine Zeit der Rückbesinnung und Vorbereitung. Von 1990 bis 1996 entwickelt die Band neues Songmaterial. Eine Sammlung davon erscheint 1996 auf der dritten offiziellen Flaming Bess CD Fata Morgana im Eigenvertrieb.
2000 – Neue Blüte
Das neue Millennium ist reif, ebenso wie die Ideen von Flaming Bess. Sichtbares Highlight ist die Fertigstellung und Veröffentlichung einer überarbeiteten Version des 96er Albums Fata Morgana als Special Edition 2001.
Bereits 1998 beschloss die Band, die immer offen für neue Trends war, die Besetzung zu erweitern, da sich auch das Projekt weiterentwickeln muss. Mit Claas Reimer (electr) wird ein junges Mitglied in die Band aufgenommen, um den Einfluss moderner Stilelemente stärker in die Musik zu integrieren. Mit Erfolg - Flaming Bess präsentiert sich heute zeitgemäßer denn je, und die fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit dokumentiert sich 2005 in der neuen CD "Finstere Sonne / Black sun".
2008 es hat uns fast 3 Jahre gekostet die neue CD "Wächter des Lichts" für Euch zu produzieren. Wir versprechen Euch ein wirkliches Abenteuer für Eure Ohren, mehr als 78 Minuten frische Flaming Bess Fantasy Story und neue Musik.

1969 – Break of Dawn
And so it came, that in the year 1969, in the German city of Düsseldorf, the cult of the goddess Flaming Bess first manifested itself. Thus, Flaming Bess is probably one of the oldest, active bands of the Rhine city. With the original line-up of Hans Wende (guitar), Horst Wagner (bass), Rolf Selbach (drums) and Peter Figge (keyboards), four courageous adventurers set out to prepare the path for a legend to be formed. However, it took them a whole decade, years that saw many personnel changes, before they finally took the decisive step to release their debut .
1977 – Departure
In 1977, the band recorded those legendary demo tapes which already showcased all trademarks of the later Flaming Bess style: carefully arranged, instrumental rock music, fused with sound collages and a fantastic story.
The rest, as they say, is history: When the band sent their demos to WDR radio, it impressed Wolfgang Neumann so much that the presented the group in his show “Rockstudio”. It resulted in the biggest audience reaction of the year, which led the band to finally realease their debut Tanz der Götter at the end of 1979.
Yet the record companies did not realize the musical potential of the band at first. Nevertheless, the single “Tanz der Götter” got an amazing 16 first places at the “Schlagerrally”, which was the most important listener’s choice hit show at the time, followed by overwhelming press reaction and more than 36.000 sold records after only six months.
1981 – A Golden Age
After separating from Peter Wahle, the band was reinforced by Achim Wierschem (guitar) Barry Peeler (guitar) and Hans Schweiß (drums). In 1981, they recorded their second LP Verlorene Welt. At the same time, they produced one of the first German music video clips. The record itself was another huge success with more than 30.000 sold copies. However, the cooperation with their record company did not last. But instead of giving in, a new band core formed around Hans Wende (b, gtr, kb), Achim Wierschem (gtr, kb), Peter Figge (kb), and Dieter Joswig (kb, perc).
In 1983 the band released the record Verschlüsselt, awkwardly enough under the pseudonym Key, which had been a condition of their record company. In 1984 the band went back to its old name and worked with their new female vocalist Ute Freudenberg.
1990 – Reversion
The 90s were a time of reversion and preparation. From 1990 to 1996, the band worked on new material. A collection of new songs was then released in 1996 on the third official Flaming Bess record, the more world-music and ethno inspired album Fata Morgana.
2000 - Renaissance
The new millennium also gives birth to new creative ideas. A first highlight is the new, revised and improved version of the 1996 album Fata Morgana, which is re-released as Special Edition 2001.
Yet the band, which had always kept a mind open to new influences, decided as early as 1998 to recruit new band members, since the project itself should keep evolving. Young Claas Reimer (electr) joins the band, bringing new and modern stylistic elements into the music. Today, Flaming Bess presents itself more in tune with its times than ever before, and the new, fertile collaboration is documented in the 2005 record Finstere Sonne / Black Sun.
Now, we write the year 2007 and soon, quite soon indeed, we will hold good news in these very hands.
It has taken us almost three years to compose and produce the new album Waechter des Lichts – and we promise you a true adventure for your ears, more than 78 minutes of new Flaming Bess music and a fresh, fantastic story.
