FLAGELLATION HAVE BEEN WHIPPING FANS’ MINDS with their relentless assault for over a decade to become one of the most exhilirating, atmospheric and crushing death metal bands to come out of Sweden’s rich scene.
Formed in 1997 in Stockholm by frontman Per Lindström (also bassist up until 2000) and guitarist Daniel Cannerfelt, it wasn’t long before they recruited drummer Marcus Jonsson, completing the band’s original line-up. As former members of respected metal acts – including cult favourites Genocrush Ferox – it was no surprise that this unity would create something crushing. Despite the fact that all the members lived in different towns, they overcame this challenge to craft the evil and aggressive sounds of their 3-track ‘Spineless Regression’ promo CD single, recorded in December 1998 with Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, Strapping Young Lad) in Dug-Out Studio in Uppsala, Sweden. Released in April ’99, the 500 copies put out through new label Last Entertainment quickly sold out, marking both Flagellation’s first recorded material and the hunger from fans for more.
The summer of 1999 would see Jonsson move to Stockholm to concentrate on the band’s material and the enlisting of Genocrush Ferox’s Toob Brynedal as a live session guitarist. With this new focus and a fresh dedication to honing their attack in rehearsal saw the Flagellation machine growing into a monster. However, it came to a halt when the band fell apart in 2000, leaving death metallers everywhere wondering what could have been.
Four years later, co-founders Lindström and Cannerfelt started talking with long-time friend and keyboardist Fredrik Klingwall about resurrecting Flagellation from the grave, more powerful and punishing than ever. Jonsson was now playing in Insision and Pandemonic and the other members had gone on to be a part of a variety of stunning musical projects. However, they all knew that Flagellation was not dead and had unfinished business. Rising again in 2006 with their first new material in over a half a decade, the recruitment of Klingwall, guitarist/vocalist Teddy Möller (Loch Vostok) and bassist Jacob Anderson (Plague Divine) made them a new and brutal beast.
With a fresh drive and determination, November 2006 saw the savage six-piece enter Black Lounge Studio in Avesta, Sweden with Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry, Centinex) to lay down the tracks that would become their critically acclaimed 2007 6-track EP ‘Incinerate Disintegrate’, released as a free download in February 2007 and the CD following in April, again through Last Entertainment. With ripping riffs and blistering blast-beats, the EP saw the band reach new levels of intensity on the blazing blitz of ‘Chaos In The Flesh’ and the flesh-tearing ferocity and evil synthesizer atmospherics of ‘Purified By Fire’. ‘Incinerate Disintegrate’ has enjoyed rave reviews from all over the world, receiving praise such as “this is what death metal is all about” (Metalcrypt.com) and “an aggressive face-breaking death metal master class” (Lordsofmetal.nl. But this is just the igniting of Flagellation’s unstoppable wildfires.
Although co-songwriter and keyboardist Klingwall left the band in November 2009 they are currently writing new material and will claim their place on the dark throne of epic death metal.
